Bosses and Ops Discussion

So, since the very beginning of Founders, I have felt that enemy bosses have been incredibly downgraded from the GW titles. They’re significantly smaller (Oak is noticeably larger than Giga Torchwood), weaker, and have had certain signature moves taken away from them, especially in their Elite forms with repetitive attack patterns only backed up by the insane amount of minions they spawn. The PvE final bosses were incredible, Major Problem is by far the best designed boss, but the regular bosses just lack that impact that they used to have. They don’t feel threatening anymore.

For example, both Disco and Baron von Bats have lost their signature minions and are replaced with generic TV Bucketheads, as opposed to Backup Dancers and Vampire Zombies respectively. It severely takes away from the experience, especially knowing how difficult and immersive these fights used to be in the GW games.

Sunflower Queen no longer has a weak spot on her glowing stomach, making that part of her design essentially useless. What could’ve been done was make her have damage resistance in her Elite form and force her stomach to be exposed in order to deal heavy damage to her. Instead, she just becomes generically invincible.

Gargantuars no longer shout and charge at you at maximum speed before slamming down their telephone pole when they reach you, which used to be a huge aspect of their behavior that made them all the more threatening and terrifying. Now, with their decreased size and less aggressive behavior, they are possibly the worst case of a boss being downgraded in the game.

Super Bean, as obnoxious as he is, also had his Overbean removed. Giga Torchwood no longer has Smoldering Madness, and Yeti can no longer rain icicles from the sky. As much as I love this game and hope that it will always improve, and I truly believe you devs are headed in the right direction, the Ops mode and enemy bosses in general just feel like a severe downgrade in so many aspects, when the little details like that actually made Ops one of my favorite modes to play in GW/GW2.

Does anybody else agree with me on this subject? I felt like this had to be said. I adore this game and this franchise, and I wish it the absolute best, and this is my message that shows just some things that I wish to be improved with this game, and I hope other people wish for it too.

  • Ops need work yet for sure. I'm still enjoying them and like that the old boss hunts are now part of the ops instead of getting the crazy difficulty boss down to 5% and then losing because someone who was low health grabbed the candy bucket and ruined everything when they immediately got vanquished, wasting nearly 1/2 hour.

Like you I want to see the backup dancers and zombie vampires back to add flavor, and want the bosses to have their special attacks back. I don't miss overbean though, that was just annoying and he did so little damage while taking so little, it was best to just get out of his LoS and wait for it to end, but I never felt threatened by it. On every other point you make, I heartily concur.

In addition to your points, I'd like to add that the Elite Yeti boss is a mess right now., It's the only elite boss I haven't beaten and it bugs a lot. I just had an elite squash boss that went smoothly, but then got an elite yeti and it wasn't half down in the time limit. There's too many imps to vanquish to spawn ragnorimp, there's too many extra mobs when trying to fight the imps, and when you do get the plunger it can bug out where even as the bearer of the plunger, your damage drops from in the hundreds to 3 (I was Citron), and then it climbs back again but by then you've lost thousands of points of damage due to the bug. This is extremely frustrating and I hate to see it at all, but when you see one and have new people in there with you, which I am seeing a lot tonight, it's far worse as I fear they'll get discouraged and leave.

I also want to see the ability to select difficulty, the ability to choose if you get an elite boss or not, and some of the old stuff back like evacuations.

  • @Iron_Guard8 Yes, agree. We were told there was going to be a 3rd set of changes to Ops, so hope this might bring about some more of the options we'd like. I'm guessing it's on hold for now while more critical issues are addressed.
