Thank you. It looks like some strange conflict with the Easy Anti-Cheat software on your system, or an issue with your Windows.
I'd suspect this is more of an issue with EAC, but it won't hurt to do a scan of your Windows install.
If you open an elevated command prompt (type CMD into Windows Search, right click the Command Prompt and choose to Run as administrator) you can run Windows self-scan by using the "sfc /scannow" command. Once that completes, you'll either be prompted to take further action by Windows, or at least you can be confident that your install is fine.
If your Windows is fine, the next thing you can try is to repair EAC itself. If you go to your game's install location then \PVZ Battle for Neighborville\EasyAntiCheat, you can start EasyAntiCheat_setup. You should get the option to Repair Service, and you want to choose Picnic(this was BFN's working title). Let this repair run then please try starting again and see if anything has changed.
SFC didn't come back with any errors.
I repaired the Picinic EAC; I can't get the error message to come back now, but it's back to the original issue.
"The PVZBattleforNeighborville_Trial.exe process does start - the game just doesn't appear. It grows in cpu/gpu/mem usage to roughly ~50% and then gradually dies down to 5% and the process closes, but sometimes it stays active indefinitely with 0% CPU/GPU and 2% memory usage.
I appreciate your help. I'm sorry about the hassle.

It's a strange one alright. If you go back to the game's install location, can you just try running the Easy Anti Cheat launcher and see does this also act in the same manner?
Do you have any alternate Windows User Profiles you can try swapping to as a test?

It behaves the same way as the original way but with two differences; It starts PVZBattleforNeighborville.exe as opposed to the trial executable and it opens Origin to get me to press "Play Now" to start the trial at the end. (Pressing it starts the original issue.)
I happen to have another user, it had the same issue. I also created a new one and it too had the problem. - EA_David6 years ago

Thank you again for the comprehensive response. Do you happen to have another system available that's capable of running the trial? Also there's an update coming in a few hours, I'll be interested if anything changes after that rolls out.

Sorry for the delay, I wanted to wait for the update.
I don't own another computer that can run the game. The update didn't change anything either, I'm afraid.
Edit:
I downloaded the Need for Speed 10-hour trial to test and it is doing the same thing as PvZ. I suspect it's not the games that are the issues, but trial licensing itself. I'm downloading the other two game trials to check them.
Edit2:
FIFA20's trial behaves similarly. The launcher opens and then pressing play launches the game process which goes up to 30% in every thing then back down to 0%. Unlike PvZ and Need for Speed it doesn't automatically close - I have to end it.
Edit3:
Madden NFL 20's trial works completely fine. - EA_David6 years ago

Thanks for the details, I think you might be on to something. We'll try doing some tests and replicate.
Edit: I tested on a few accounts and sytems, the trials have worked fine.
Can I check what security software you're using? - 6 years ago
I only use the default Win10 Windows Defender / Firewall since I almost never venture out of a few select sites.
