Character Guide - Acorn and Oak!
Hi everyone,
This guide series is going to cover all of the characters in this game. This guide will cover the Team-Up characters, Acorn and Oak. Some information will be added to these guides some time after I have completed all of them.
I used these following links to help me with some of the information in this guide:
The rest of the information in this guide is my own information, and refer to these links if you want more information on Acorn and Oak.
Overview of the Characters
Acorn and Oak specalise in a team-up role, where Acorns are able to ride Oaks as passengers, or turn into Oaks themselves. Acorn has low health but is very mobile and hard to hit, while Oak has very high health and deals significant damage, although is very easy to hit. Up to 3 Acorns can ride a single Oak, and you can jump on an Oak as an Acorn at any time, even without it counting as an ability. You may eject at any time as well.
Acorn is a Defend character on the Plants faction that attacks enemies using constant firepower and disrupts enemies, and he has 75 health.
Oak is a Defend character on the Plants faction that attacks enemies using large explosive attacks, and he has 300 health. You can transform into Oak while in Acorn form.
Primary Weapons
ACORN
Primary Weapon: Shell Shot. It is a weapon that shoots wood chunks at enemies, dealing about 7 damage for regular hits and 8 damage for critical hits. It has a fast rate of fire and the default ammo capacity is 45.
OAK
Primary Weapon: Wood Grief. It is a weapon that shoots explosive wood chunks at enemies, which can deal direct and splash damage. It will deal 40 damage for direct hits and 16 damage for splash damage. It has a slow rate of fire and the maximum default ammo capacity is 10.
ACORN PASSENGER
Primary Weapon: Treetop Turret. It is a weapon that shoots wood chunks, very similar to default Acorn's primary weapon, although it only deals about 5 damage for regular hits and 6 damage for critical hits. It has a very fast rate of fire, and it has infinite ammo, although the weapon will overheat if you attack for too long without a pause.
Abilities
ACORN
Sap Trap: This ability deploys a sticky explosive trap which will stick to the ally, enemy or object that it gets stuck to. It will not do anything at first, however if you press the same button that you used to activate this ability, it will detonate, dealing 60 damage to enemies very close to the explosion, or 15 damage to enemies that are further away but not too far from the explosion. It will knock away any enemies that are close enough to the explosion. You will take knockback if you are close enough to the explosion when you detonate your Sap Trap, allowing you to get around quickly or access higher vantage points. You can set your Sap Trap up as a trap and wait for an enemy to go past, and then detonate it, or fire it into a group of enemies and detonate it very shortly after. You could even stick it to an ally and detonate the Sap Trap when your ally gets close to an enemy. Just be mindful that your enemies can destroy your Sap Trap before you detonate it.
Check the Sap Trap upgrades at the end of this Abilities section. Most of the Sap Trap upgrades apply to both types of Sap Traps, so the appropriate upgrades will be compiled there.
Acorn Dash: This ability launches you in any direction with almost no delay, which has many uses, such as evading enemy attacks, escaping battles, regenerating health someplace safe, getting back into a fight, or confuse your enemies during a fight by using this ability as it may be hard for them to track where you are. Use this along with your small size and agility to make yourself a more difficult target and to distract your enemies. You get 2 charges of this ability, however you must wait about 1 second between each use of this ability, so this ability will be more available on demand. You could use an Acorn Dash to enter a fight and another to escape, or use an Acorn Dash during a fight and another to escape. Due to have multiple charges of this ability and it being versatile, you can use it in almost any situation where it will be useful, but always try to have at least a single charge ready at a time so you can leave the battle if the situation gets tough.
Acorn Dash Character Upgrade:
Quickdraw (3 upgrade points): Activating your Acorn Dash will restore 22 ammo, or almost half of your maximum ammo. You can activate your Acorn Dash during a fight if you are low on ammo to prevent needing to reload, therefore potentially leaving yourself vulnerable during a fight. As you have multiple charges of this ability, you can basically use your Acorn Dashes in quick succession to restore almost all of your ammo if you ran out of ammo. If you use this upgrade, you may want to save most of your Acorn Dash abilities for a fight, as restoring ammo will not have much of an effect if you are trying to escape or enter a battle, as you likely will not need the ammo immediately or will already have a full clip of ammo. Save at least a single use of Acorn Dash during a battle, so you can essentially convert a reload into a dash which you can use to avoid attacks.
Invoke Oak: This ability allows you to transform from Acorn to Oak. You should not use this ability at any random time, as the transformation process will take about 4 seconds, you will be completely unable to move and vulnerable to damage. Your regeneration will be negated during this time as well, so use cover and look for enemies before activating this ability. When you eject as Oak and transform back into Acorn, this ability will be on cooldown, so you will have to wait to transform into Oak again. Once you are in Oak form, you may remain as Oak for as long as you wish.
OAK
Super Sap Trap: This ability deploys a large sticky explosive trap which will stick to an ally, enemy or object that it gets stuck to, similar to the regular Sap Trap. It will not do anything immediately, however when you press the same button used to activate this ability, it will detonate, which will deal 125 damage to enemies very close to the explosion, or 15 damage to enemies that are further away to the explosion, and it will additionally knock away any enemies hit You can set up your Super Sap Trap when you would like to as a trap and wait for an enemy to come near it, then detonate it, or quickly fire it into an enemy group and detonate it when it lands in that group of enemies. You could even stick it to an ally and detonate it when your ally gets close to an enemy. Your enemies can destroy your Super Sap Trap before you detonate that, so take that into consideration. This is more powerful compared to the regular Sap Trap, but it has a significantly longer cooldown.
Check the Sap Trap upgrades at the end of this Abilities section. Most of the Sap Trap upgrades apply to both types of Sap Traps, so the appropriate upgrades will be compiled there.
Roll for Damage: This ability launches a bundle of logs which roll forward and deals 60 damage to any enemy hit by it. You can use this ability to deal additional damage to enemies and as a form of trap, and it will be more effective when used against nearby enemies as they will have less time to react to your logs. Your enemies will be able to jump over the logs, although if there is not much space to move around in an area or there is a low roof, the enemies will not be able to escape the logs. When there are multiple enemies around, the Roll for Damage will be useful as well because each individual log has the capability of dealing damage to an enemy, although it is almost impossible to hit the same enemy more than once by with logs with a single use of this ability, so having the capability of hitting multiple enemies at a would be more effective. Each log will break when it makes contact with an enemy, but if an enemy avoids a log, an enemy behind them may still get hit by it.
Roll for Damage Character Upgrades:
- Log Jam (1 upgrade point): Your Roll for Damage is now 50% wider and has doubled velocity or projectile speed. Because the ability now covers a wider area, enemies are more likely to be hit by Roll for Damage and it has the capability of hitting more enemies with a single use of this ability. The doubled velocity means that your Roll for Damage will travel twice as fast and enemies will be less likely to avoid as they will have less chance to react to it before jumping over, which is especially useful when used close to your enemies. These benefits will make your Roll for Damage much more powerful against your enemies, so use it frequently and when multiple enemies are about to make this ability much more beneficial. It is a cheap upgrade as well, so give it a go.
- Natural 20 (2 upgrade points): Enemies will now take knockback when they are hit by your Roll for Damage ability. You can use this knockback to push enemies away from particular areas, or you are more likely to hit the same enemy multiple times with a use of this ability, as they may be pushed back into another log. You can use this ability when your enemies are close to a cliff or hazard to try and push the enemy into it, or use it when enemies get close to you and your allies to keep them away from your team. You may get a better advantage if you use this ability in an area with a low roof, as your enemies will not be able to jump over your logs to evade them and they will take the knockback. You can additionally knock your enemies away
Treeject: This ability transforms you back into Acorn, which you can do at any time, with no cooldown and nearly no delay as well. Use this when you are taking lots of damage or when you need to escape, as Oak cannot sprint and move very fast, and is a large target. In a worst case scenario, hopefully you will be vanquished as Acorn, allowing you to be revived. If you are vanquished in Oak form, you will be unrevivable.
ACORN PASSENGER
Lumber Support: This ability provides you and the Oak that you are riding with healing. During this time, you and Oak will gain armor which reduces incoming damage. The healing will not be an instant effect, but rather it will last a few seconds which will heal you and the Oak during this ability along with the armor. Use Lumber Support if either you or the Oak you are riding is getting low on health, or even after taking some damage so you can begin the cooldown of the next use of this ability. You and your Oak can gain overhealth using this ability, so if there are no enemies around, you could activate this ability to give yourself and the Oak overhealth before entering a fight. You could even use this ability when under heavy fire as you will take reduced damage while healing, making it much easier to survive during this time. Note that if another Acorn passenger uses this ability, the Oak will still be healed but you will not, instead the other Acorn that activated it will receive healing as well. Try and get as much use out of Lumber Support by using it wherever possible to keep your squad surviving.
Lumber Support Character Upgrade:
Party Supplies (3 upgrade points): You and your Oak that you are riding will be healed at a faster rate, which does not really increase your healing, however it improves the rate at which you and the Oak will be healed. You and your Oak that you are riding will additionally retain the armor from this ability for an extra 4 seconds. You can use the increased healing speed when you or your Oak is at critical health to reduce the chance of being vanquished with the healing, or use it during a battle and your enemies should not be able to deal damage faster than you and the Oak are healing during this time, especially paired with the armor. As you and your Oak will retain armor for longer with this upgrade, you could even activate this during an intense battle to fortify against damage and use the healing to revert a bunch of the damage you may have already taken.
As an Acorn passenger, your Sap Trap still functions identically to regular Acorn. Your other ability is Treeject, which allows you to leave the Oak that you are riding on, similar to when you eject Oak normally.
Sap Trap and Super Sap Trap Upgrades:
- Molasses (2 upgrade points): This upgrade applies to both types of Sap Traps. Any enemy that are in the vicinity of your Sap Trap or Super Sap Trap will be slowed down to 40% of their original movement speed, until they escape from this vicinity. You can use your Sap Trap and Super Sap Trap in areas where there will generally be multiple enemies, such as objectives, and you can use your Sap Traps as a way to reduce the chances of affected enemies escaping, allowing you and your allies to vanquish the affected enemies. If you detonate the Sap Trap or if your enemies destroy it, this effect will end until another type of Sap Trap is deployed. The Sap Trap will emit a radiating aura, allowing enemies to identify the Sap Trap more easily and to know if they are in the slowdown area, so take these notes into consideration.
- Slap Back (2 upgrade points): This upgrade applies to both types of Sap Traps. Your Sap Trap and Super Sap Trap has additional knockback and will knock enemies further away. With this upgrade, you will be able to launch yourself with the Super Sap Trap if you are Oak. The additional knockback could be used to knock enemies away from cliffs and away from you or allies if they get up close and personal. Try placing your Sap Traps in an area where your enemies are trying to head, like an objective, and when your enemy approaches your Sap Trap, launch them away to slow them down. Additionally, try deploying your Sap Traps into a group of enemies and detonate it to seperate your enemies, making them easier to vanquish as they will be seperated.
- Rewind (3 upgrade points): This upgrade only applies to the regular Sap Trap. If you do not deal any damage to any enemy with your Sap Trap, the refresh time of your Sap Trap will be reduced to 1 second. You can use this upgrade to your advantage by using the Sap Trap on yourself continuously to launch yourself, which you could do to get back into a fight or during a fight to make yourself much harder to hit. If you try to deal damage to an enemy and you fail to, you essentially get another chance due to only having to wait a moment before you can try again. You should consider that if you damage only a single enemy or only deal splash damage, this effect will not activate, so you want to try and deal direct damage to your enemies where possible or miss so you get another chance to use another Sap Trap almost immediately.
Exclusive Character Upgrades
These are the exclusive character upgrades for Acorn and Oak.
Little Friend (2 upgrade points): Your ammo capacity for all your weapons are increased in all modes, and the overheat rate for your Treetop Turret in your Acorn Passenger is greatly reduced. Your Shell Shot weapon as Acorn is increased to 56 (instead of the regular 45) and your Wood Grief weapon as Oak is increased to 14 (instead of the regular 10). This is greatly useful during a fight as there is less need to reload and you can keep shooting. Reloading can leave you vulnerable during a fight so use the enhanced ammo capacity to reduce the chances of this happening during a battle. As this upgrade applies to all of your forms, this upgrade is very useful as you can always benefit from this upgrade.
Hardened (3 upgrade points): You gain a passive maximum health boost in all modes. Your Acorn now has 100 maximum health (instead of the regular 75), including while in passenger mode, and your Oak now has 375 maximum health (instead of the regular 300). The health boost will help you to survive during a fight and improve your durability in all modes, as well as improving your chances of escaping a tough situation. If you can use your Lumber Support ability on an Oak, you can gain even more overhealth, even allowing you to survive some attacks and abilities that deal huge damage. Because you will benefit from this upgrade in all of your forms, this upgrade is excellent as you are always able to benefit from this upgrade.
Nutty Feedback (4 upgrade points): This upgrade only applies to Acorn. Dealing damage to enemies will restore ammo for your Shell Shot, allowing you to deal damage for much longer or possibly during an entire fight if you keep landing your shots without needing to reload at all. You can deal damage with your primary weapon or your regular Sap Trap as well. If you miss many of your shots, this upgrade will not prove to be useful, so if you are having trouble landing your shots, try not to move around as much or focus on attacking targets that are easier to hit. If you use this upgrade, you should probably use regular Acorn more often because Oak or an Acorn Passenger will not benefit from this upgrade.
Usefulness in Situations
General
ACORN
More effective against single targets and at close range, due to your primary weapon being useful at dealing damage to a single enemy at a time and at close range to improve the accuracy of your shots.
OAK
More effective against grouped enemies at close range, due to your primary weapon and abilities being useful against multiple enemies and at close range to improve the accuracy of your attacks and abilities.
ACORN PASSENGER
More effective against enemies that your Oak is attacking for additional damage, or against enemies that Oak is not attacking to deal damage to multiple enemies at once and for suppression.
Reviving Allies
- As Acorn, use your Shell Shot for cover fire against your enemies and your small size to avoid enemy attacks.
- As Oak, use your Wood Grief to deal plenty of damage to your enemies during a revive and use your high health to tank enemy attacks.
- As Oak, activate your Roll for Damage before you start a revive to distract enemies or for additional damage.
- As Oak, if you have Acorn Passengers on top of you, they can heal you and provide you with shields and extra firepower, making the revive process much easier.
- As an Acorn Passenger, if your Oak is reviving an ally, use your attacks and Sap Trap for bonus firepower, and Lumber Support to heal and armor the Oak.
Contesting the Objective
- As Acorn, your Shell Shot can be used to attack and vanquish single enemies at a time. Use your small size to avoid enemy attacks and contest effectively.
- As Acorn, use Sap Trap to deal damage to multiple enemies or knock them away.
- As Acorn, use your Acorn Dash to avoid enemy attacks, change position and contest the objective.
- As Oak, use your Wood Grief to deal with grouped enemies or to finish enemies that are at low health. Use your high health to stay alive.
- As Oak, use your Super Sap Trap to deal plenty of damage to multiple enemies or to knock them around.
- As Oak, your Roll for Damage can be used to deal significant damage to multiple enemies or to deny area.
- As an Acorn Passenger, provide additional fire with your Treetop Turret.
- As an Acorn Passenger, use your Sap Trap to deal lots of damage to grouped enemies or knock them around.
- As an Acorn Passenger, make use of your Lumber Support when you or your Oak needs healing to keep both of you in the fight for longer, along with bonus temporary armor.
When Abilities are Negated
- As Acorn, use your Shell Shot against nearby enemies. Use your small size and keep moving to dodge some enemy attacks.
- As Oak, use your Wood Grief to attack groups of enemies or enemies approaching you. Your high health will assist you in surviving.
- As Oak, activate your Roll for Damage before collecting an item to damage enemies that appear in front of you.
- As an Acorn Passenger, you are actually able to collect an item and then ride on an Oak, as this does not count as an ability. The Oak can protect you and take you where you need to go.
- As an Acorn Passenger, attack with your Treetop Turret for extra damage on enemies.
Tips
- As an Acorn, use your Shell Shot to deal rapid damage to enemies. You should attack a single enemy at a time as it makes your Shell Shot more effective. Keep on the move while fighting enemies as while you have low health, you will be really hard to hit.
- As an Oak, use your Wood Grief to deal damage to grouped enemies, or just attack one enemy at a time if they are not grouping. Always try and aim for direct hits as you will deal maximum damage this way. While you have a lot of health, you can be vanquished easily if being attacked by multiple enemies as you will be easy to hit.
- As an Acorn Passenger, you can use your Treetop Turret to either attack enemies the Oak is attacking for bonus firepower, or attack enemies that the Oak are not attacking for damage on multiple enemies at once with your squad.
- Use your Sap Trap and Super Sap Trap against multiple enemies where possible, or set it up as a trap and wait for an enemy to come near it. After that, try to detonate it so they will take full damage or knockback as a minimum. Try not to place it in a location where your enemies could easily destroy it before you have a chance to detonate it.
- Your Acorn Dash can be used for many reasons, but however you decide to use them, try and have at least a single charge of your Acorn Dash ready to use on demand in a fight, so that if you need to retreat, you will be able to do so. If you gain another charge during a fight, you could use it to your advantage while saving your final use.
- The Roll for Damage is great when multiple enemies are around, and when you use it at close range, as you can deal more damage to your enemies this way while reducing the chances of your enemies avoiding the attack. Enemies will not be able to jump over it if there is a low roof, stopping them from jumping over it.
- Use your Lumber Support well to keep you alive to keep supporting the Oak, or on the Oak when it gets low to keep the Oak in the fight longer. In a fight where you find that your squad is taking lots of damage, use the ability to remove most of the damage you have taken and provide armor during this time to reduce further damage.
- If you wish to play as regular Acorn more often, and you find a situation where you are low on health, if there is an Oak nearby, hop on quickly and activate Lumber Support to heal you with possibly overhealth as well, as well as supporting the Oak a bit, and then eject again after this.
Well, these are my Acorn and Oak tips. Thanks for reading!
