Character Guide - Chomper!
Hey everyone,
This guide series intends to cover every playable character in the game with some depth and detail tied into it. In this guide, I will be covering the Chomper!
I used the following information for some of the information in this guide, the rest of it is my own information, you may also refer to this link if you wish to know more about Chomper, go here: https://plantsvszombies.fandom.com/wiki/Chomper_(PvZ:_BfN)
Overview of the Character
Chomper is an Attack character on the Plants faction that bites their enemies, and has 175 health by default. It has a Primary and Secondary weapon that do not count as abilities. Its primary weapon is a "Powerful close-range bite."
"Close range attacker that can snare and slow opponents and can Burrow underground to instantly vanquish opponents. Don't let them see you coming!"
Secondary: Slobber Shot - Hold (aim button) for long-range spit projectile.
Primary Weapons and Abilities
Primary Weapon
Primary Weapon: Chomp. It is the Chomper's main weapon that is used when not holding down the aim button. It deals 41 damage in a very short range (by default) to enemies in front of you. The rate of fire of Chomper's primary is medium to fast. The Chomp has infinite ammo and does not overheat, but is limited to close-range.
Secondary Weapon
Secondary Weapon: Slobber Shot. It is the Chomper's secondary weapon that is used while the player is also aiming. It deals 34 damage for regular hits and 41 damage for critical hits. The rate of fire of Chomper's secondary is slow. It has infinite ammo and never overheats.
Abilities
Spikeweed: This ability launches a Spikeweed in the direction where you aim it. This ability can have up to 2 slots, meaning you can throw out up to 2 of them at once when they have recharged. When enemies step in this, the snared enemy is unable to move, shoot or attack and takes 75 damage. This means that you can easily attack them, and they cannot attack you back while caught in the Spikeweed. However, their allies can still attack you. Try to place this in more unsuspecting areas, as they can easily be destroyed by enemy fire.
Spikeweed Character Upgrades:
- Vampire Spikeweed (1 upgrade point): Whenever a Spikeweed that you have deployed either successfully snares an enemy or even if an enemy destroys it, you gain 50 health. You can even gain overhealth this way as well. This is great for improving your survivability and for giving your Spikeweed extra benefits.
- Symbiosis (2 upgrade points): When you vanquish an enemy with Burrow, at your location, you automatically create a single or multiple Spikeweeds, randomly but guaranteed, for free. You will create at least 1 this way. Each Spikeweed created this way will last 90 seconds before disappearing on their own. Great if you want lots of Spikeweeds at once, and to make it easier to get even more vanquishes.
Burrow: This ability makes you burrow into the ground, which means you become invincible. You can eat an enemy that is directly below you while using this ability, if you use the same button on your device or console that you use for your primary weapon. You are invincible while you use this ability, so you do not take damage during it. However, once you eat an enemy or the timer runs out, you are vulnerable to attacks. It has a bit of delay before it resolves, and if you eat an enemy, for a short time, you move really slowly and cannot attack, so be mindful of when you decide to have lunch.
Burrow Character Upgrades:
- Hotrod (2 upgrade points): When you vanquish an enemy with your Burrow, you move 55% faster for 5 seconds after you have got the vanquish. The speed penalty is also removed while you are digesting the enemy. This can be good if you like to eat your enemies, then want to get away and try and get more vanquishes without being vanquished yourself.
- Well Fed (3 upgrade points): Moving slow or not moving at all while you are using Burrow, can up double the duration, if you do this the entire time. This is good if you want to wait out an enemy, or if you intend to stay in Burrow for longer at the cost of speed. Moving at normal speed will not grant you the benefits of this upgrade.
Grody Goop: This ability throws out a toxic cloud that affects a fairly large area. Enemies caught in it cannot sprint or use their abilities, and if they are in it for a long enough period of time, they take 40 damage and then start taking toxic damage over time for a short while. The Grody Goop can spread to an enemy's allies, meaning they can also get damaged with the initial hit and the toxic damage. That means that this ability is useful against clusters of enemies, to deal lots of damage at once, or on enemies with less health, to hopefully vanquish them with it. Same goes for if they are damaged. This ability is great for weakening enemies. While enemies are taking toxic damage, they cannot naturally regenerate as well. Consider that now!
Grody Goop Character Upgrades:
- Upset Stomach (2 upgrade points): Grody Goop lasts for 12 seconds now instead of 10, this can be really useful as you can deal even more damage to your enemies. This can be really useful when you are up against groups of enemies, or make it easier to vanquish enemies with less health and weakened enemies.
- Dirt Bath (3 upgrade points): When you are in Grody Goop, you now move 20% faster while in it, as well as your attack speed with Chomp and Slobber Shot being increased by 20% as well. These effects also apply 5 seconds after you exit Grody Goop. This is good if you can catch enemies in it, as you can vanquish them with ease. You can also throw Grody Goop on yourself to buff yourself, if you prefer.
Exclusive Character Upgrades
Chomper's exclusive character upgrades are as follows:
Face Bite (1 upgrade point): Your Chomp (primary weapon) deals 30% extra damage to enemies if you hit an enemies' head. This is great if you really like to get up close and personal with your enemies a lot. Just be sure to aim for the enemy's head. Note that this only applies to your Chomp (primary weapon) and it will not work for Slobber Shot (secondary weapon).
Halitosis (3 upgrade points): When you use your Slobber Shot (secondary weapon), additional splash damage is dealt. Depending on where an enemy is, they can take 5-9 damage from this. This is good if you want to deal extra damage to enemies with your Slobber Shot or negate enemy regeneration, or even for dealing damage to grouped enemies. You deal extra damage on direct hits with Slobber Shot as well, an added bonus. Note that this only applies to your Slobber Shot (secondary weapon) and it will not work for Chomp (primary weapon).
Chomp Thing (3 upgrade points): It takes much less time for you to start regenerating health naturally. It only takes 30% of the normal time before you begin to regenerate naturally, which is 70% off, like in a sale with 70% off. This is useful if you want to stay in fights for longer, or if you like to get back into fights sooner. This does not directly affect the rate that you physically regenerate, but it begins sooner.
Mastication (4 upgrade points): When you vanquish an enemy using your Burrow, you digest them 60% faster, or in other words, it only takes 40% of the normal time to digest an enemy. This leaves you vulnerable after you eat someone with Burrow for a much smaller amount of time, reducing your chances of being vanquished. If you are trying to survive after eating enemies, stay with your team and try out this upgrade.
Usefulness in Situations
General
More effective against closer targets and groups of enemies, due to Chomp and Burrow being only effective at close range and because Grody Goop (and other attacks and abilities) being useful on enemy groups.
Reviving Allies
- You can throw your Spikeweeds and Grody Goop out before starting a revive, to help your team, and hopefully to deal some decent damage.
- You can use Burrow to get to ally. You can begin a revive while you are in Burrow, but once the revive starts, your Burrow will be cancelled.
- Use your Chomp against enemies close to you and Slobber Shot against enemies further away.
Contesting the Objective
- Use your Chomp against enemies close to you, or Slobber Shot on enemies further away.
- Throw your Spikeweeds into the objective to deny area and hopefully snare enemies.
- Throw your Grody Goop into the objective to deny area and to hopefully weaken multiple enemies at once.
- Use your Burrow to eat an enemy, and make them unrevivable. You can also contest in Burrow, so you can contest the objective while invincible. Use the Well Fed upgrade (3 points) to make the Burrow last longer. Try to activate Burrow behind cover so you do not get vanquishd first.
When Abilities are Negated
- Once you have collected an item, you can Chomp enemies close to you, or Slobber Shot enemies further from you. Keep in mind that you move even slower while using Slobber Shot, so it may be worth focusing on the objective instead and hopefully your allies can assist you.
- You can deploy your Spikeweeds and Grody Goop first before collecting an item to hopefully deal some extra damage to enemies, and for a small amount of protection.
Tips
- When it is possible, aim for grouped enemies and enemies closer to you to make the most out of Chomper, or single targets if attempting to Burrow them!
- If using Slobber Shot, you can jump and aim to hit your enemies. Your movement speed penalty is mainly gone and you can make yourself harder to hit. You just need to jump, quickly aim, and attack. You can do this as often as you want.
- Throw Spikeweeds in more unsuspecting areas when you can, as they can be easily destroyed. If you can snare a single target, you and your team can get an easy vanquish.
- Try to use Burrow on unsuspecting targets, especially if they have strayed away from the group. If your team is with you, you can distract your enemies by burrowing near them, as you can scatter them and they will probably focus on getting away from you.
- Use Grody Goop on clustered enemies when possible as it is excellent at weakening enemies. If you use this ability from behind, it can do some serious damage.
