Character Upgrades - Defense Upgrades (Guide)

Hello,

In here, I will be covering the upgrades that are unique to Defense characters, which means only Defense characters can ever use these upgrades. This specific guide covers the Defense upgrades, they start out with these upgrades from the beginning and you do not have to do anything in order to unlock these upgrades. I will be covering different aspects of the Defense upgrades, such as their point cost, use, their stat boosts they provide, and which situations they are worth using in.

I use the PvZ Wiki (no specific pages) to help me with upgrade names and stats, check out a BfN character (Defense class) in the PvZ Wiki and check out the upgrades, there you go, that is my source.

THE DEFENSE UPGRADES

These upgrades are automatically unlocked for all characters from the start, and you do not need to do anything to unlock them. However, these upgrades only apply to Defense characters. It is just a matter of whether you want to equip to each of your Defense characters or not.

Health Regeneration

This upgrade costs 2 points to equip. When you are naturally regenerating, you regenerate health at double the regular speed, this is great if you have high health and have lost lots of health, or if you have a shield you can use it to protect yourself while you regenerate.

What situations this upgrade could be good to use in:

  • Along with the Health Regeneration Delay upgrade.
  • If you like to quickly get out of fights and start healing more quickly.
  • If you have higher amounts of health, as you will regenerate that health much faster.
  • If you have access to a shield or cover.

Health Regeneration Delay

This upgrade costs 2 points to equip. This upgrade cuts the delay in half before you are able to start regenerating again, this is good if you manage to get out of a fight and want to get back in quickly. If you have lower amounts of health, this can prove to be useful as your overall regeneration rate can be sped up.

What situations this upgrade could be good to use in:

  • Along with the Health Regeneration upgrade.
  • If you have loads of health, or even low health works as well.
  • If you want to reenter a fight faster.
  • If you have access to a shield or cover.

Best Defense

This upgrade costs 3 points to equip. When you earn a critical vanquish (this means getting a direct vanquish, and the last blow being a critical hit on an enemy), you gain armor, meaning your damage is reduced for a short time. This effect can stack up to 3 times. You will gain 10% reduced damage for 10 seconds on a successful critical vanquish, and getting another one in this time will reset this buff and give you 19% reduced damage for another 10 seconds instead. If you manage to get another critical vanquish during this time, you will take 27% reduced damage for a further 10 seconds. This can be useful in fights with multiple enemies, just make sure to try and aim for critical hits.

What situations this upgrade could be good to use in:

  • If your character has high health, making them even more tanky.
  • If you can land critical hits or get critical vanquishes quite easily.
  • Making yourself more durable, especially in fights with multiple enemies.
  • Protection, if your health gets low.

Fallback

This upgrade costs 3 points to equip. When you are at low health, you gain a movement speed increase for any situation, such as walking or sprinting. You get a 20% additional speed increase, whenever your health is at 20% or below, which could be good for retreating. This is useful if your abilities are negated and are trying to get somewhere, or if you need to head back for your team to get protection, or to provide protection for them if you have a shield or something.

What situations this upgrade could be good to use in:

  • If your character has high health, as this will activate at a higher health span.
  • If you need to retreat to your team or to heal.
  • To indicate you are at low health due to increased movement speed.
  • If you want extra speed (in some situations).

Adrenaline Rush

This upgrade costs 3 points to equip. If you get a vanquish in any sort of way, you gain a faster movement speed for a short period of time. It does not matter how you get the vanquish. Shared, direct or critical will be fine, however vanquishing Pots, Bots and Summonables will not trigger this effect. You gain a 40% increase to your movement speed, whether you are sprinting or not, for 3 seconds, after you have vanquished an enemy. This upgrade is good if you have won a fight with an enemy and would like to fight another enemy, or if you want to head back to your allies for whatever reason.

What situations this upgrade could be good to use in:

  • Getting to other enemies faster.
  • Getting back to your team faster.
  • If you can get vanquishes quite easily.
  • If you would like extra speed.

CONCLUSION

While the Defense upgrades are actually quite basic upgrades at the end of the day, and do not provide massively significant buffs when used, they can be equipped and unequipped as much as you would like and they can very much benefit new or less experienced players while they get more of a grip on the game. You do not need to unlock them before you can use them, and these upgrades may even synergise well with some of your other character upgrades you have access to.

You are unable to equip all of the aforementioned character upgrades at once, and remember every character also has access to basic upgrades from the beginning, so consider what upgrades you think are best for you. What fits your playstyle. The upgrade system replaces variants in this game, so be sure to take advantage of these upgrades.

Bye for now!

  • Good thread!

I always equip Health Regeneration and Health Regeneration Delay when I play Defense Characters except snipers!

In my opinion, Leveling Up Upgrade is less useful than Health Regeneration Delay upgrade to get XP.

Health Regeneration Delay will give you more XP than Leveling Up.

@CharlesHlcBendel How can you get more XP through Health Regeneration Delay instead of Levelling Up? 🤔 I really like Health Regeneration and Delay by the way, as they can greatly improve survivability, especially if your character has a shield.

Because, if Health Regeneration Delay equipped PC can 11 or more vanquish instead of Leveling Up equipped PC 10 vanquishes, the former PC can earn more XP (Leveling Up only gives you +10%).
And Health Regeneration Delay equipped character can at least +10% vanquish, IMO. This and Health Regeneration upgrade are very strong.

@CharlesHlcBendel That is actually really cool, it grants an additional effect which boosts your character, rather than just “I level up faster!”

  • @TheSprinter85 Yeah! 😇

I think, as Health Regeneration Delay, some useful upgrades will give you more XP than Leveling Up! And make your character more unique!

  • Hi, thanks for the post but it’s over my head. I’m super new to the game. Which characters are defense characters and how do I find these upgrades?

@Jakbkwikly Characters are grouped into 4 classes, that you can see in the character selection menu. There are 3 defense characters on each faction, which generally have high health or are snipers. These upgrades I have listed in the guide are not unlocked from the start, you need to level up and promote them in order to begin unlocking these upgrades. You can promote a character in your hub. I have made other guides like this for all of the upgrades, which you can check out if you want to know what all of the upgrades do.
