Chomper Needs A Rework/Tweak

Why Does Chomper Need To Be Reworked or Tweaked?

Chomper has always been a hard to balance character from design alone. While I think most people can agree he is too overpowered or reliant on gimmicks right now, I think that the best way to fix this balance situation is to rework or tweak him to be a more balanced character as he relies too much on gimmicks. I believe he should be a bit more consistent and have his ‘cheap’ element toned down. I will answer any questions if there are any and respond to any ideas I like ASAP.

Quick Important Note

I am going to heavily change his perks/upgrades to have positive and negative side effects because I think perks would be cooler if they changed more and overall acted more like a good substitute for variants. I am doing it for his unique upgrades (Not The Attack or Basic Ones).  Secondly, I am adding damage dropoff, but I want many characters to get damage dropoff so remember that this is also designed for that mechanic existing.

    • Spikeweed Then Does 35 Dmg

Conclusion & Notice

Chomper should be based more in reliable abilities and upgrades, while also giving him many options to work with. Overall, I believe that these massive changes would make Chomper feel as a new, yet familiar character that can still fill the role of a brawler and  assassin, but he can do a few other things with upgrade changes allowing him to change up his playstyle enough to make each build feel unique in some way.

So if you read this far, thank you. I appreciate some reading my thoughts and what should change. I am going to start a rework/tweak series, with a format similar to this. I am going to do a Zombie next and it will most likely be Engineer, but you can request if you would like another character done instead.

  • @SundropDot Thank you for making such a detailed post on the matter 🙂 I think I disagree with more elements of the list than I agree with, though. While some things from this list would definitely be nice, it would be weird if certain things like damage drop off would only apply to Chomper. I feel like some suggestions would make him a rather bad character, but others could work well. In order for these changes to work a large portion of the game would have to be reworked and PopCap clearly has no interest in doing so.

On a side note, I do not think Chomper is more powerful than Super Brainz. Although there as been a large community outcry about Chomper, I still think he is worse than Super Brainz with his Jump, 2 insta-kills and health upgrades. Brainium Basher 9001 takes his superiority to another godly level.

While I only agree with your opinions to a certain point, I have to say I love your detailed post and upvoted it 🙂.

@benn1nat0rThank you for the support. Just to make things clear, I understand that for these changes to be implemented damage dropoff would have to be in the game alongside the changes to all upgrades to fit more like the ones I designed. I redesigned this character on the grounds of having these mechanics in the game already. It is more of a what I would do if I could change many things about the game. In my vision of the game, most to all perks would have a positive and negative side (a trade-off) and damage dropoff would definitely be apart of it, alongside a few minor but important changes.

@SundropDot I would like to see how these changes work out. I think that Chomper’s Slobber Shot should do more than it does now at close range, but much less at long range. Perhaps about 50 at near point-blank range, but only about 2-5 at very long range, which can deal this damage to multiple Zombies if you have Halitosis equipped.

The only problem I have is overall, it sounds like Chomper would get nerfed too hard. I’m seeing, for instance, 30 seconds for Cooldown of Burrow if vanquishing someone, but you can only eat them at half health, for instance. He sounds like he would get more nerfed than buffed.

But excellent list and look forward to seeing more!
  • Largely agree here. I would add that Spikeweed needs more health as it's trivial to destroy right now.
