Chomper himself eats zombies. That’s his whole job in the original plants vs zombies. Eat and than be vulnerable to kills. That’s who he is, and if they took out the eating part, it wouldn’t seem like Chomper. With the range attack already it doesn’t feel like Chomper. I think they down-played the insta-kill already. You can’t just goop and eat from behind and you can’t eat them if they’re snared unless you burrow. People had problems with Chomper before, and I think that’s why they limit his eating to only on ability. Since that ability is his only escape, being that he’s supposed to be more stealthy, it’s cooldown isn’t that long. Good Chompers have to think more stealthily and can’t attack in groups unless with a very strategic plan. There’s a lot of abilities in this game that can kill in one shot. Plus it’s pretty easy to avoid chompers just by climbing onto something. Yes I’m a Chomper main, but that’s why when I play zombie, I can sense how chompers act and usually always climb on something if I’m shooting from far away.
I haven't played new Chomper that much yet but the changes they made mostly seem to make him more of a team player and less of a solo assassin. On a side note, when you burrow a screen door zombie, you don't eat the screen door anymore, you eat the zombie and the door. I didn't get to try it on an outhouse zombie yet though.
in GW2 a lot of people complained about the instant arming of spike weed and I think they wanted to address that here. The fact you can spit it at range means gives it a little extra versatility and the goop replacement is an AoE damage cloud that can be useful to restrict choke points. You can also spit out decent damage at range by zooming in, meaning zombies can't hide on rooftops like they used too.
Not being able to chomp someone from behind is going to take some getting used to and I found that I couldn't burrow robot soldiers when fighting some in Town Center. However this does mean you're not going to accidentally chomp someone when trying to bite them so you aren't stuck digesting them and unable to attack or use abilities.
I do need more time playing Chomper but it looks like they made him less annoying to play against and more supportive of the team. I would classify him as defense over attack, but that's a matter of opinion/perspective.
