Class Discussion: Torchwood & Hovergoat-3000

Since these 2 characters only exist in GW2 and have no alternate abilities, I decided to cover them both here. There was an alternate ability in the works for Torchwood, some kind of sprint ability that we never got. Would have loved to have been able to use it.

Torchwood. The biggest plant character prior to Oak in BfN, and may have been a partial inspiration for it. Lots of health, not very fast, and easy to hit. They nerfed his main weapon quite a while ago, but I say they went a bit too far with it, and that Blazin’ Blast is more of an issue (although extremely fun to use). Often targeted in PvP matches unfortunately, although this seems to be more of a byproduct of them selling the upgrade where you can buy it, then the character itself, you don’t actual see these guys in PvP matches all that much, but it’s a solid character. Fun fact; when you use the character in Ops, he appears as a full-sized Giga-Torchwood at the start and parts of him are visible outside of Penny thanks to that, then he lands and shrinks to the smaller player version size. The costumes are a nice extra touch that foreshadowed the sets that we have in BfN.

Despite the nerf, his main weapon, the Wood Chipper, isn’t bad and is very satisfying to use. A wooden Gatling gun on an angry, flaming tree is something I’ll always enjoy playing. Better close up as it becomes highly inaccurate at range, it’s not too bad on the overheating but could definitely benefit from BfN’s overheat indicator on the HUD.

When you use Smoldering Madness, you not only can fire the Wood Chipper without overheating, it also lets you move faster, it also causes fire damage, and you get bonus XP for getting vanquishes while the ability is functioning! It also turns your head fire from red to blue which doesn’t really do anything, but looks cool. I love this ability.

Blazin’ Blast is essentially, fire breathing. It’s a short-ranged cone that is extremely powerful and can take out a lot of zombies. This makes it excellent in Ops for obvious reasons. A lot of people complain about this ability, and I can see why, but if they did nerf it, they’d need to buff Wood Chipper to compensate. It isn’t all that hard to escape from this ability as it’s short ranged, but it sure can rack up the vanquishes!

Leaf Shield slows you down even more than usual, and that’s saying something as the big guy isn’t speedy in the first place. It cuts damage in half(!) and lasts for 15 seconds or until you cancel it. This makes our tree friend even more of a tank than ever and great for taking/holding key points as the loss of speed is less important when you’re already standing where you need to be.

I have a hard time resolving the overlap between the Acorn’s Oak and Torchwood being playable at the same time, but I’d not complain if they did do this in the next game.

Hovergoat 3000. I admit that when we found out the new ‘zombie’ was a goat, it was a, ‘what?’ moment for me, but once I got the character, and GW2 reference here; the blue trial of recollection and the red trial of hot doom were the hardest for me, I found it’s a solid support character that is fun to play. Being immune to Goatify, as you’re already a goat, isn’t a huge bonus, but certainly not a bad thing. It has a nice hover jump and moves well. I enjoy all the costume sets they made for the character as well and like Torchwood, foreshadowed the many such costumes we have in BfN.

Their main weapon is a fairly typical; high rate of fire, reasonably accurate, and decent magazine size. It takes awhile to reload, but nothing too onerous. Not a lot to say here really; nothing amazing, but not bad.

The Damage Buff Booster Beam is a great ability that not only let’s you help a teammate cause extra damage, but gives you XP for doing so. Obviously, you have to say close to your ally, but it’s extremely effective. This is the number one thing I see Hovergoat players use, and that includes me when I play this character. Again, while it’s a great ability, it never feels oppressive to deal with as a plant unless you get teams of the things, backed up by Scientists, and then it’s a tough not to crack; considering how powerful healing is in BfN, I’m actually glad this character isn’t in the game, although at least it’d be hard to use with Brainium Bashers as they rely on streaking around.

The Mega Awesome Laser is another turret like mode, but as you can move, albeit slowly, it’s one of the better ones. It reminds me a bit of the big beams for Cats and Dinos. There’s not a lot to say about this ability either; it works as advertised and doesn’t feel OP or too weak.

Finally we have Tubular Turbo, which gives you and all nearby zombies a temporary speed boost. This is a nice little boost of speed that feels better than the Double Time ability in BfN, since the Goat can use it as needed and it can be used on the fly, it feels more akin to the BfN version of Rose’s arcane enigma with it’s effect that speeds up nearby allies. Another decent ability without it feeling awful or amazing.

Looking over the character, Hovergoat 3000 just feels like one of the better balanced characters in the game.

For the next game, I’d like to see the character brought forward, with variants like that Scapegoat I posted on the GW2 forums long ago. You could move its abilities to other/new zombies instead if need be, but I can’t see too many people being upset about the goat returning to the game series.

  • @Iron_Guard8 Probably the most underappreciated characters in the shooters.

They nerfed wood chipper to be lower than all stars damage because the plants had all star but better for a while.

The wood chipper sound design is really good on Torchwood.

I'm don't hate blazing blast honestly its a super close range high dsmage ability and most Torchwoods can be baited into using it than being defenseless. If your getting killed by blazing blast maybe, idk dont let torchwood get that close.

I truly believe that Torchwood is a much better tank than citron. His weapon falls off at longer range but he will shred you at close range, his body, size allows him to block a large amount of damage, and leaf shield protects him but also slows him down making him vulnerable to zpgs. Compare this to citrons more assault/tank hybrid combo in 2 and even bfn.

Smoldering madness is a great ability as your speed is increased, you deal fire damage, can shoot infinitely, and no zombie can mistake that you're not in it. It's insanely useful in boss hunts and ops.

You actually deal less damage in smoldering madness btw.

Leaf shield is good but has its weaknesses and leaves Torchwood in a good or bad spot depending on how the player utilizes it.

2nd mastered character in gw2 so I've leaned back on him to play with other characters.

His downed state being a small log is nice.

The gingerbread house is my favorite outfit.

Hovergoat 3000 is insanely underrated and underappreciated.

He has decent health and a solid primary. His jumps are useful.

The damage buff is a great ability and if popcap really wanted to focus on support type characters in bfn than hovergoat should've replaced engineer and move him to defense. It's really nice to use with the deadbeard who's sniping in the back or soldiers on rooftops. He still had to be near his buff target so he is still in danger of reatilaition due to his bigger hitbox.

His laser allows him to still move unlike other turret modes but he drains battery and is weaker than solar beam. Its a solid ability.

Turbo is a great ability as he can pop it around teamates and have them take off without having to stay near him and he himself is not invincible like bfn arcane enigma. Imo its far better than any speed boost they tried to give us in bfn.

I think some people threw hovergoat under the bus for being a goat visually and it hurt people from seeing how good the character is actually designed unlike tv head or wildflower.

He is one of the better balanced character because he IS a better designed and balanced character.

I like the reindeer costume the most.

Really sad we didn't get these two in bfn as I feel there some of the better designed characters honestly and hovergoat is a far better support character than engineer or rose.

Really miss these two and I hope one day they return with variants, but if they want acorn to have variants I can see Torchwood being the mech like equivalent of a fire acorn.

I don't like torch and tail pack but I can see why people buy it due to the nowadays slow rotation of the mystery portal as it takes 200 to get all keys and 150 to get them, not bad back in the fast days of 2016 but not now with the rather unrewarding 5 star rewards per game.

I feel like scrapping hovergoat but moving his abilities to another zombie would be a waste of a new zombie.

Anyone who uses these 2 in boss hunt knows what there doing 100%.

@stukapooka Agreed on all points. I use Torchwood more than Hovergoat, used him last night to get the epic quest 'Defeat a super boss wave' quest done, after having to do 4 or 5 Ops plant side to get it, bleah.

I'm doing the swarm characters last in this series. They are the only characters in any of the 3 games I actually dislike. I may not like some variants or changes to classes over the games, but the only ones I actively feel should not exist are TV Head and Wildflower. I don't like them as AI and like them even less as players.

@Iron_Guard8Yep Torchwood is great for ops even as an ai ally and is practically necessary for crazy if you dont have healers. Wierd how we never got solo play teams for the characters, kinda dissapointing. Selecting ops on crazy should guarantee a super boss wave, would make the quest easier.

I may not like every variant but at least i can see what they're trying to do with them like tank commander or disco chomper.

Tv head and wildflower though are completely reused character assests besides the respawn buckets rushed out as characters for the games death and they gave them melee for some reason to make them more interesting. Their ai is just annoying and they absolutely slaughter the already lacking pots of bfn and lets not forget how many other better spawnable ai were cut from bfn altogether.

@stukapooka And that's my main issue with TV Head and Wildflower; they shoot as their main attack and not as a secondary, rare ability used by most AI to keep us from exploiting their melee focus. They destroy the turrets which worked well enough against the regular AI, but when swarmed with these guys, the bots/pots are just outclassed. I normally applaud PopCap for their creative characters and abilities across the PvZ universe, but these guys have got to go.

@Iron_Guard8Yep they're completely lame from a player and ai standpoint and in gameplay they murder the pots and bots which was relegated to the role of hero classes and their variants in garden warfare as pots could even deal with heavily armored spawnables but who needs balance in flow in ops anyway? Just spawn them in on wave 1 witg soldier and imps.

The lack of new characters especially with tge years of concept art and games is dissapointing as bitter dill is the only original plant boss despite the fact that they had an imitater in the works since gw2.

Tv head also gives the zombies 1 more class than plants regardless and rumor has it they had to rush wildflower beacuse a super bean class already failed them, either way plants were gonna be stuck with a ripped ai class. So dissapointing.
