I disagree with you entirely. I've found PvZ's unlock system way more entertaining and balanced than any other game to date. I'm sorry that you couldn't unlock the entire game in 30 hours but if you're looking for a game to be 100% complete in 30 hours, then this might not be the game for you.
- 9 years agoScrubs seem to think that having to spend a hundred hours to unlock all playable characters in a competitive game adds some sort of value. Most recently I've put over a hundred hours into online competitive games such as Super Smash Bros (4), Marvel Vs Capcom 3, Pokemon X, Gears of War, etc. These are games that don't hand out playable characters and other PVP components based on time spent and RNG. They are just great competitive games with mechanics so solid that they don't rely on handing out core gameplay mechanics to keep their community coming back for more game time.
Making players invest 100+ hours to unlock all gameplay content through RNG isn't good design from a competitive stand point. I won't stop playing PVZGW2 once I have all the unlocks. I don't continue to play PVZGW2 for unlocks either. I play it simply because it is a fun game. It would just be more fun if the game didn't lock it's content behind a grind which will inevitably lead to a "pay real money to get coins in order to gamble and bypass the absurd unlock system"- 9 years ago

Still complains about not having all things unlocked the first week the game comes out.You do realize that part of the game is collecting things right? Snow globes, character accessories, gnomes, CHARACTERS.
Gears of war does not have collectibles aside some forced dog tags in maps or whatever.
Pokemon X .... hmm did you complain you don't start the game with zapdos right away? What about that poor scrub who plays pokemon that ONLY likes shiny mew, but hey.. Is it up to the game company to give everyone a shiny mew?
No. If they want to use 1 specific character class you should have to work for it.
(Using pokemon analogy because you brought up that game.)- 9 years ago@iEmulatedi , handing out unlockables through RNG is not "working for it". Having to master a plant or zombie to unlock it next variant would be "working for it". But you missed one of my main points. In a balanced online competitive game you shouldn't have to work for it to use it. You should have to "work for it" to be good at it/with it. A specific example of "working in for it" is spending 12 hours in the training room with Ryu to learn combos.and specific timing or playing hundreds of online matches in Pokemon while learning to tweak your teams moves or mons' to ensure a better win rate.
Unlocking characters and abilities through RNG = not working for it
- 9 years ago@Phayd , I get that it's hype and entertaining to unlock sticker packs but how can you say that it's the most balanced?
Best balanced = all characters and abilities for competitive play are unlocked for everyone upon simply purchasing the video game (Gears of War, Marvel vs Capcom, etc.)
Still balanced = handing out exp or currency that can be spent on whatever abilities you wish to use (Star Wars: Battlefront)
Not balanced at all = relying on RNG to handout characters and abilities over days of play time (PVZGW2)
Once again this isn't about "completing a game". I'd still play 30+ hours of PVZ even if every playable character and move was unlocked upon simply purchasing the game. I'd just be enjoying it more if you could buy what you wanted to from the store. Or better yet, if you wanted to add a bunch of fluffy replayability to your game make it so we unlock the next class by Mastering that plant or zombie.- 9 years ago
The thing is... It is 100% balanced. Everyone has the SAME RNG.
You're balance complaint makes no sense and has no ground.
Are you saying just because someone is luckier than you with an unlock the entire's game balance is shifted in their favor?Maybe you have a bigger problem and are just awful at the game.
- 9 years ago@iEmulatedi, you are aware RNG stands for random number generator right? The fact that you think us having equal RNG % = balanced is laughable. You have an equal RNG chance of being able to pick a Rose as everyone else so I guess ultimately it's balanced because the RNGesus says so.
Any one person unlocking top tier characters and abilities 20 hours before someone else due to RNG is not as balanced as everyone having access to all characters. Don't even know how you could debate otherwise.

But you can't deny things like tier lists, frame data, etc. You will never see a player in the top 1% win an Evo tournament with a Hakan (SFIV). Skill is important, but so is character balance. You will never get true balance with a roster of over 50 characters let alone a 100.And I think that this is terrible game design. If you believe that a game cannot be truly balanced, and you should have access to the most overpowered characters/variants in order to abuse them, then I understand why you don't like this unlock system. I'd rather that the most overpowered characters/variants be nerfed and the developers give themselves enough time to implement those nerfs by not allowing everyone to be Fire Rose day 1. PopCap has an excellent record, recently besmirched by the post-beta Rose buff, of rapidly balancing variants that have become "Tier 1".
For the sake of a healthy, veteran player base, I would much rather that players like you don't get Fire Rose at will and drive off the casuals.
