You must first be in a party with said friend, then join the game session. If he's in the main menu, he will automatically recieve an invite to the game you've just joined.

The simple answer is, you don't.
There is no real party system in this game, you have to start a game and hope that your friends are able to get into the game before it fills up and even at that the odds are they will be stuck on the wrong team, fighting against you.

This isn't entirely true, on Xbox One it is much easier to bring your party into a game with you. It's fairly easy to get everyone onto one side considering plants are out numbered in most games.
