You have better luck then I sir. I will say there is a nitch for every class. Some people can mop the floor with any super brainz. I am not one of those that can consistently do it well. With the GW1 map returning I feel he will shine brighter for me.
I tend to focus my shots on enemies that are close as @asukojo points out earlier; A-they're hard to miss when that close, B-you generally do more damage to close enemies over distant ones, and C-a closer enemy is generally a larger threat than a distant one.
I rarely play assault scientist myself anyway, I use the heal ball and support more than being a shotgun assassin, but I've seen it pulled off so it can work, but when playing plants I tend to watch for that for obvious reasons.
