Scientist is worse than Imp in my opinion.
To test this, use a Sunflower on the Scientist only Battle Chest and try to hit him with Solar Flare. I’m almost certain Scientist has a skinnier hit box than Imp.
Wish we could see artwork of the current boxes.
I haven’t checked that but I most definitely will. I have noticed scientists being impossible to hit but attributed to the fact that they can warp out of any move you hit them with. Solar flare has always been junk. Close range solar flare shoots through most objects without damage. I can have an enemy highlighted and locked in, only to miss. I never use my flare because of this issue.

@GraveledStoopid I found out how bad the hit boxes were when I made Solo Battle Chest tutorials for Mount Steep.
I can hose any character in the game but not Scientisf. I didn’t realize it at first and thought the same as you - maybe the warp, etc, was causing me to miss. Nope - hit box is built like a needle.
