Is xbox live mandatory for PvZ GW? on XBox One?

My kids got an XBox One for Christmas, along with PvZ GW.  They were playing it fine, we don't have XBox Live.  Tonight, we were unable to play, something about EA not being able to connect?  We never connected to anything before as we don't have Live.  It also made us create an E/A accout which I thought would clear the error.  It didn't.  Are they unable to play the game normally, without a subscription?  I thought for single player or even when playing with friends that they would be able to play the game.  They aren't old enough to have to have a Live acct.  Please help.  Thank you.

    If they were able to play fine before, I would assume that the primary account being used already had an EA Origin account.

    Normally Xbox Live Gold is required, but the Xbox One allows players to only access splitscreen without a Gold account. An active internet connection is always required, as it has to connect to EA servers to access progression and inventory.

    From reading other posts, it seems that EA servers were down sometime over the weekend.
