Local co-op and levelling?

Just purchased garden warfare.
After having downloaded and installed the game myself and my girlfriend decided to give the splitscreen mode a play.
It turns out that despite logging into my account, I do not level as the 2nd player in splitscreen mode? Nor can I level on my own account and have that level applied to myself as the 2nd player in splitscreen mode?
It's very aggravating to only have one person be able to actually use their levelled characters in splitscreen, I hope I've missed something and there's a way around this?
