As someone who's been doing it since yesterday, i can tell how to reproduce the bug.
How i did it is really simple: as the map was loading, i spammed Y and as soon as i saw the character team switch screen, i changed to spamming A. I'm not sure if holding the left stick in the "right" position during the whole process helps or not but that's how i did it. This would require further testing to confirm.
It seems that by spamming Y and then A, your character is selected and your team switched before the team check for your character is done thus, you end up in the other team as the character you first selected.
This could be fixed by adding a timer or another team check before spawning the character on the map.

Last night, I got shot down by a gatling pea on the zombie team. That was jokes.
