If it's that much of a problem for you, there is a post on reddit of a work around.
It details how to disable hearing other people and disabling your own mic.

I don't use reddit, but I will look at it if possible. It is a big deal. Do you have a link?
Edited: I found the link. Does not help me since setting a device to default is not an option.

I'm not so comfortable posting links to 3rd party sites, but heres what it says:
To disable other peoples' chatter:
- Right click speaker icon in system tray.
- Select Playback Devices.
- Select a Playback Device other than what you use for sound output.
- Right click it and select Set as Default Communications Device.
- Hit OK.
- Left click on the speaker icon in the system tray.
- Click the icon below the slider on the device you chose to mute it.
To disable your own mic within the game but use a 3rd party voice application:
- Right click speaker icon in system tray.
- Select Recording Devices.
- Select a Recording Device other than your mic (maybe Stereo Mix?).
- Right click it and select Set as Default Communications Device.
- Right click it and select Properties.
- Select the Levels Tab at the top.
- Click the icon next to the slider to mute it.
- Click OK.
- Go into the settings of your 3rd party app and set the input device to your mic.

We shouldn't have to use third party software for push-to-talk functionality. The last game I'm aware of that had voice that was always on with no, bindable, push-to-talk key was "Lord of the Rings: The War in the North" and that game was also heavily criticized for it.
It would be cool if developers played the games on PC before they released them. I realized it was a problem in my first match when there was some kid screaming the whole time he was playing. Then, the next match when some mom was showing her adorable little children the "cute little cactus" while they were screaming in the background. In fact, I literally have not had a single game where there hasn't been some kind of background noise picked up that I've had to mute.
So much for teamwork. - Anonymous12 years ago
It shouldnt even be nessecary for a work around. it should just be implemented... -.-'
