plants vs. zombies Can not play anything, but split screen

I have Purchased plates vs. zombies for my son to play on Xbox one.    When he starts the game it will only let him play the split screen mode.    When he clicks on the Garden Ops and Multiplayer all the games does is "Click".     We have purchased the Xbox live gold, but it will still not work.   Thanks for the help in advance.
