Plants vs Zombies Creator FIRED For Not Wanting Pay to Play?

http://www.ign.com/articles/2017/11/21/plants-vs-zombies-creator-reportedly-fired-by-ea-for-objecting-to-play-to-win

I find this kind of stunning because I see the direction of the series actually NOT taking the pay to play route really at all... To the critics of EA, remember that there are different wings of EA, with Popcap being different from other branches.

Would be an interesting time to re-hire that guy and take the series back to it's mildly MATURE RATED ROOTS. If the series is going to be targeting young people, maybe they should put 10 and under on the ESRB rating.

  • I read a similar article earlier today. With the whole Battlefront 2 loot box thing going on, I think it’s drawing attention to every EA game. Which kinda sucks. The timing of the frosty packs coming around the same time certainly doesn’t help. Paid content is not what veterans of GW are use too, or assumed when told there will be free DLC. There has been free DLC but there were never promises to no paid content....ever. A lot of attention has been drawn to EA games with even Forbes writing about it. I think changes need to be made, but GW is way down on the totem pole compared to AAA titles. It’s just unfortunate times. Belgium is currently working on a law to prohibit paid for loot boxes/ in game content and accessories. With other countries seriously looking into. This really makes me miss the simple times of only getting frustrated when you had to take the cartridge out and blow on it to make your game work.

I can’t even fathom what it’s like to have something taking away from you that led to something that became so huge. Unfortunately this is how big business works. With all the recent articles and screw ups, things are starting to vocalize the community. Hopefully some good comes from this that benefits both the gamer and EA.
  • From what i've read this all happened way back in 2012 and he was laid off, not exactly fired for not wanting to make the game P2W (though knowing EA it could have still had a result.)

Now why something like this is only just now being brought up years after it happened? i'm sure it's just to cause even more drama for EA and their microtransation drama since it's such a hot topic right now. Some of the former popcap employees even commented and said that his story is false (both the creator's and the guy that started this rumor on a podcast who was a friend of his). They say he was laid off due to the management at popcap deciding to shut down the office where the creator happened to be working at and at the time he wasn't even working on PVZ2 but a different game.

For now just take the whole story with a grain of salt since there's no major proof on either side. For now i think this story was just made up just because of the loot box problems with EA to give them even more drama which is why the story blew up as fast as it did.
