Plants vs zombies game of the year crashes when trying to resume level

I only downloaded the game yesterday but I'd forgotten how addictive it is! Got up to level 4-9 this afternoon and the screen started flickering black, eventually the game just crashed completely. Now every time I open it it opens fine but I can't get it to play the level, the hand comes out of the earth like it should but instead of going to the level it just crashes.

I have checked that my laptop meets the requirements and it does by a long way, everything is up-to-date, the anti-virus isn't messing with it. I don't want to have to uninstall it in case I lose all the data.

As a side-note I can open the almanac, crazy Dave's car shop, and the puzzles and minigames but it crashes when I'm playing them just as it did on the actual level.

I don't think origin is the issue as Sims 4 has been running fine. 

Does anyone have any ideas what's going on with it?
