Based on what the team said in the Live From PopCap stream my take away is that the original end date was set due to the server load which is created every time someone performs a character transfer or checked their Ranking between GW2 and GW1- anyone who knows how those sorts of things work knows that servers have a finite amount of resources to spread around to different tasks and when you stretch those resources to too many things everything slows down or starts failing.
It sounds to me that the date was originally set in stone due to some technical reason concerning something happening 'behind the curtain' on the backend and that recently the PopCap team were investing time in trying to figure out a workaround to extend the date probably due to player demand and the number of new players coming into the game to give people a bit more time but if you notice they didn't actually promise that this would happen; for any situation involving technical limitations it's easy to be optimistic while you're looking into it but ultimately it's not always possible and it was probably a mistake to mention the possibility before any extension was actually finalized because now we have situations like this where some people are pointing to the livestream saying "Probably Yes" and now the Twitter post saying "Nope not possible".
