PvE Quest/Side-Quest Balance

I don't really have a question, just a general bit of feedback based on what I've played so far. I've bolded the main point for those that want a tl;dr or an easily digestible sound-bite, not to try to sound rude.

I picked up this game a bit before my friends did and hopped into the PvE zones and found they are immensely frustrating to play by yourself. I understand the game is trying to encourage you to play with others (because that boosts engagement metrics) but I really hope the team will consider scaling the difficulty of the PvE quests/side-quests based on the number of people playing in the instance. Even some of the story missions feel nigh impossible if you either don't have multiple people or aren't playing as Sunflower (I assume playing as Sunflower would help, as I've been playing Kernel Korn, but some of the bounty hunts require DPS and sustain, so just Sunflower wouldn't cut it).

I love exploring the Town Center zone, and really want to enjoy the content it has, but I can't always play with friends, and the seemingly mandatory need for more players puts a significant damper on that.

  • I was wondering if you could play with friends after some of the encounters I had last night. I had a few treasure yetis spawn and I couldn't take them down solo playing as an acorn and switching to Oak as needed. The main quests in GW2 were all solo so I wasn't sure if you do these multiplayer or not and if you can, that would be great.

I fully agree with scaling things based on team size too. One thing that GW2 did better than GW1 was scaling ops for team size and I think it would be a good thing to have for the free roam stuff too.

  • Agreed, I don't know why this game is as hard as it is in the quests. Makes me want to avoid that alltogether and just stick with PVP which is a shame because the PVE is incredibly charming.

@Iron_Guard8The only Treasure Yeti kills I've managed to get solo (two so far out of several) were possible because the Yeti got stuck on the geometry. Their health is ridiculously high, and the rewards (taking an item back to a specific place for another reward) aren't that great (even the reward for delivering the item isn't that great, from what I remember).

@Iron_Guard8  - yes, you can have your whole group with you in places like town center.  Everyone can open the chests you find and everyone shares the rewards you earn.

I find the town center quests painfully difficult as single player.  I did quite a lot of it in the alpha with another player who is very skilled, and it was just do-able  During the alpha is was said that the quests were still being balanced and that the difficulty might be very high.  Well, nothing seems to have changed from the alpha.  I've eventually given up already on doing these quests for now.

The ability to set the difficulty levels for PvE like we have in GW2 would be most welcome.  Right now, with the low damage output of many characters' primary weapons, I feel like I'm playing on craaazy difficulty.

I am glad to see that I am not the only one. I've stopped trying. The health is ridiculous on most of the characters including the screen zombies and the bosses are insane. I also did the beta and that was also my complaint. This is supposed to be fun. I miss being able to stir up trouble by going as a plant into the zombie base and running back out then going back in to plants as a zombie. 2 was so much simpler and quick. Although, I didn't own the game when they had the key system (I heard that was terrible). The last time I played Garden Ops on Normal though, I didn't make it to 10 and thought did they change the difficulty on this now also??? Why? I should be able to get through the quests alone or why can't I spawn friends like in 2. That was what was so wonderful about playing alone, you could pick your AI like crazy! and then switch between them which was ingenious. It also would be good if the Taco guy was at "home". I'm deviating, but please if possible make these quests possible or let me bring in AI. Its so boring to play alone.

  • I actually did most of the quests solo, and I didn't find most of them to be that bad. Though the Battle Chests are extremely difficult at higher difficulty.

I may be wrong about this, but I think enemy health increases with more players? I dunno. I just find it easier to kill some things when playing solo compared to split-screen. Treasure Yetis and Marigolds especially.

@pandareno1999  if you need help with anything on any of the maps, just let me know.

Happy to help you tackle Mount Steep next week, too.  We can attack things with @dwooten77 and belittle him, if he makes any mistakes or dies?

  • @Iron_Guard8 Treasure yeti was the plant quest I had most problems with. I did manage it solo eventually but it was down to a lot of luck, because you need him to spawn & die near the well, otherwise you get taken out & the dog breaks.
Difficulty scaling definitely needs looking at.
Most of the other quests I had to do with a friend & we found peashooter & sunflower the best combination. Happy to help anyone on Xbox with plant quests if needed, but am more likely to need help myself with the zombie ones! 🤣
