Well, if it actually took him 9 months then he was probably using Citron.
I started playing at the end of June and got through to gold league in a few weeks by just playing the decks I needed for the quests. I did gold and diamond similarly but I would just do quests first and then, if I had more than 4 stars I would actually focus on just winning to get the next few stars with minimum backtracking. I was using a profesor deck back then.
I took a month and a half break around this time also, so I've only really been actively playing for about 4-5 months. For taco league I started with a super Chomper deck until my win rate suddenly went down, then use a Citron deck that got me through ranks 43-47 with a very high win rate. Then i suddenly started losing with it so I switched to my Frozen Veggies Peanelope deck (I'll post it later on) which also had like a 90% win rate (or it felt like that).
I play for fun, not to grind, so getting the final 200+ games to get past taco league can take a while when you only play a handful of games a day.

Oh, do freeze decks actually do that well?
By the way, I will use a f2p green shadow deck to climb the last 4 ranks. And then I will post the deck, then everyone gets to go to ultimate league.
