PvZ won't let us play offline as a one player.

Question

We bought the game PvZ for Xbox 360 and it won't let us play as a player against the game. It loads/installs but won't go any farther. It says our profile blah, blah, blah Xbox Live functionality.??? I don't have an Xbox Live Gold membership. Can you only play it online?

Unfortunately Garden Warfare does not have a single player nor offline mode. It is an online shooter that always requires an internet connection and Xbox Live Gold.

There is one game mode only available for Xbox One that can be played without a gold subscription, but I guess that doesn't help.
