Yes and no you need to root your phone if you root your phone thats the only way but rooting is hard and it your removes your warranty but if do root your phone there will be a hidden folder thats now unhidden I think its >data>>data>com.ea.game.pvzfree_row>files so go to there in file explorer and if you look online find a save file copy and paste in there if you dont want to root your phone like me theres nothing you can do  and the game is so buggy that if he plays it again  his data will probably get erased again I contacted thier support 5 timess and spent hours looking online for a way to solve the issue nothing

unless your phone is already rooted its not worth rooting your phone
