As far as I know, one can still troll in that manner.  Only the person setting the bait needs to have earned the difficulty level.  At least that was the case for the Yeti King.

In my opinion, ideally one should be able to select their desired difficulty level prior to entering the portal.

    I agree; my initial point was that it's no longer possible for someone who doesn't want to play at all to automatically set the highest difficulty level; there is of course no way to stop someone who has unlocked them all from doing the same, but at least there is the barrier of having to earn access to the difficulty level before you can choose it.
