OK, I got it figured out after I called Origin. I was not familiar with Origin and did not understand how it worked. The key here is that you have to download and install the Origin app on your PC or Mac. Once you have it installed, you connect your PS4 account to Origin. Then, quit the PvZ application on PS4 and restart it. You should be connected and able to play the game. The key is to download Origin app on the PC or Mac. If you don't do this, you won't be able to connect. So much research needed the noobs like myself just to play the game! Wow. Of course now that I understand that you need to have Origin installed, I see that this question was already answered above already by @WasterWobs However not knowing anything about Origin, I did not understand what the answer actually meant.
If you already have an EA account on your PC all you have to do is google search for FIFA 17 Demo. It will bring you to a EA link to download the demo. You also need to select the download for PS4. As long as your email address on the Origin account is the same as the one for the Play-station account it will automatically download to the PS4. Hope this helps. It worked for me not more than 1 hour ago.
That answer helps NO ONE who is having this issue with connecting on their PS4 console. No one is playing this on a PC. How do you make the EA servers work on a PS4? No one knows....

Ok I've tried your resolution, downloaded Origin, logged in, connected my PSN account, successfully linked and still I can't connect to the EA servers
It would help to say that after installing Origin on pc or mac, you have to open the app, click on Profile settings and then on a button (Enter on EA.com). So, in your browser at ea.com you should go to Settings and then to Connections (the very last option). In this page you will find a way to connect to you console account.
This process is way bizare.. EA should hire more UX Designers and UX Writers to create more informative text and better flows..
