If they were able to play fine before, I would assume that the primary account being used already had an EA Origin account.
Normally Xbox Live Gold is required, but the Xbox One allows players to only access splitscreen without a Gold account. An active internet connection is always required, as it has to connect to EA servers to access progression and inventory.
From reading other posts, it seems that EA servers were down sometime over the weekend.
