The scientist is fine, the maps are the problem. The majority of them are set up for close quarter combat. I used the scientist in GW1 and would wreck as bad as GW2, actually, even more since there wasn't as many different plants as there are now.
The Paleontologist is the best option for range and the Astronaut zombie also.
