In order to access the Multiplayer and online Co-Op game modes you must be logged into your Playstation Plus account; however the game does offer offline game modes which simply require you to have an active Internet connection so that the game can connect with the servers.

Playing "offline" with just an Internet connection but no PS Plus account will allow you to play the Solo Quests ("L.E.A.F. Agent" and "Top Zombie")and to access Solo or Private play equivalents of the Multiplayer modes only with AI characters rounding out both your team and the opposing team- the AI isn't as good as actual Multiplayer but at least it's there. You'll also be able to play the Infinity Time mode when you unlock it through the Solo Quests and there will be the option to Split Screen as well.

Not having a PS Plus subscription will lock you out of true Multiplayer and true Co-Op play, and that will unfortunately include pretty much all the major stuff in the Trials of Gnomus update, which will include the Mystery Portal found in Town Hall which is available 3 times a month. The Mystery Portal has no Solo option and since it represents the fastest way to collect Rainbow Stars, and because Rainbow Stars are key to unlocking the Trials of Gnomus, you'll have a chunk of the game which includes unlocking two additional character classes pretty much unavailable to you.
