Re: Spooky Squash Nerf

@Moltaiverse  Agreed. Doing the Spooky Squash or the Yeti King with a team of randoms is very difficult to achieve. I have managed to complete this elite boss before, but it's still very difficult. Luckily I play mostly in split-screen so I don't find this as hard, because I have better team communication. But, I think that the developers should bring boss hunts back from GW2 and put the Elite Yeti and Spooky Squash (also known as Pumpkin Squash) back into there. 😃

The current state of Ops is largely without challenge for the veteran PvZ players in the community.

The Pumpkin Squash and Yeti Elite Bosses are the two things in Ops which actually requires the team to work together and to understand the mechanics. With a team which simply knows what to do, or which can acknowledge simple “follow me” and “stay together” expressions and figure things out both Bosses are easily defeated with only moderate effort.

Nerfing either as a crutch for players who can’t be bothered to learn the mechanic or follow directions would be a disappointment for all of us who already find the bulk of Ops disappointingly easy.

@TheSprinter85 I have always been really on and off with PvZ. I have been playing since the first game since 2010, but didn't really get back into GW2 until 2018. I never got to play Boss Hunt, but always really wanted to. Thanks for your input, I totally agree.

@realitysquared I actually agree with you, I guess I'm most annoyed at my teammates, not the boss. It's annoying seeing them still try to kill him when they're doing 1 damage, and never notice the Chomper. I think Ops is mind-numbingly easy too, so I guess instead of nerfing the boss, an indication from Zomboss or something saying "try something else" would be nice for those who keep shooting the Squash when half the team is running after a Chomper would work for me too. Or Custom games, that would be perfect. Thanks for the input. (:
  • @Moltaiverse Zomboss does make commentary but it’s really easy to miss those little pop ups at the top of the screen in the heat of battle.

There’s less of an excuse involved when I run straight up to players who are shooting the Squash or the Yeti and flash the “Follow Me” and “Stay Together” expressions several times only to be ignored.

So I do agree that the most annoying part is trying to get players on board with what needs to be done.

Aye, the worst part is trying to get some people to cooperate. I've had pretty good luck overall, seeing new people catch on quickly is always nice, but just like boss hunts in GW2, some people either don't pay attention, don't care, or are intentionally sinking it. I've not seen the intentional one more than a couple of times thankfully (as far as I can tell anyway), but lots of the not paying attention one.

Just last week we had an elite Disco Zombie boss and 3 of the 4 of us went right to the gramophone almost immediately whereas our 4th player was all over the place until finally catching on. To be sure, I appreciate those that may not know what to do but eventually get it and help. When I used to run lots of group content in MMOs it could get pretty nasty to new people which I find counterproductive. How are they supposed to catch on or even care if you just berate them? I have no such sympathy for those that intentionally cause us to fail, but a lot for those that are earnestly trying. In a game that has to have a community to thrive, I don't want to scare people off!

Yes, its difficult with new folk who haven't quite got the hang of the whole thing and don't realise the importance of getting these stages done swiftly.
We all need time to get the hang of it.... much like the boss hunts in GW2... I have nightmares about doing them.... always had to do them with randoms and rarely did it go well 🤨
hahahaha remember when the wrong person would eat the candy in the Squash hunt, and some did it more than once  😃😃😃
Of course. it would be very helpful if Popcap provided some instructions for these things rather than relying on the forums and community videos etc to teach people 🤨

And in Bfn we do occasionally get those folk who insist on grabbing the buff thingymajig and then refuse to stand where eveybody can get use of the buff or jump about like crazy things so that nobody can stay in the buff zone ... that's a bit irritating and can lose you the match like with that imp the other night 🤔🙂 I have had that happen a few times when there was a much more suitable character to hold the buff.

@Iron_Guard8 You seem like a nice person, I can see you just want the best for others. As long as you keep that in mind, and stay patient with others, I'm sure things will go perfect for you. If you need another person for your group, I'm always looking for more friends to play this game with!

@asabaida Ah yes, the buff holder should generally be someone with high health too so it doesn't get lost easily and I also try to take care of all the adds with the buffed weapon damage so we don't get swarmed. I failed a GW2 squash hunt on crazy once when I was playing toxic brainz and my friend was a scientist, we had the squash down so the next candy run would easily vanquish it but I was at very low health so we were holding off while he healed me so it wasn't lost immediately and an impatient foot soldier grabbed it and fell over quickly so we lost that one. We were NOT happy as that would have been our first crazy win, luckily we got it later.

I also owe you an apology for one of the elite bosses we had when I was an all-star with the buff and accidentally charged the boss once which didn't help as the rest of the team were out of the zone. >.<

As a public service announcement, if you're holding the buff ability, please don't stand too close to the elite boss, especially the squash. That PBAoE stun is murder on our damage output!

@Moltaiverse Thanks for the kind words! Are you on PC? That's where I spend my days in Neighborville. Of course cross-play would make that less of an issue!

Yes as @Iron_Guard8 says, we are both on PC... if you are on PC and would like to join us then you would be very welcome 😃 and we will beat that big fat orange squash 😃

  • @asabaida 🤣

I'm always with randoms in Ops because
I'm not lucky enough to be on PC with you guys 😭
While I may end up with inexperienced players though, I'm lucky enough to usually be with players who are at least trying their best whenever we get Squash or Yeti.
That's all you can ask & in those circumstances, I don't have a problem AT ALL if we don't win!

@Iron_Guard8 Sadly, no. I'm on PS4. Cross play would be nice, hopefully we can get it later. From seeing what other games have it, I know it would take while though.
  • @Iron_Guard8 I had an Elite Disco Zombie boss the other week with a team of newer players.

All three continued attacking him after he panicked and gained invulnerability and I repeatedly flashed “Follow Me” to try to lead them to the gramophone but they were to involved in the attack.

Thankfully there no time limit for the Elite Disco boss so I just casually made my way to the gramophone, vanquishing the spawns of zombies which popped up and sat at the gramophone using “follow me” and waiting patiently.

One player caught on and sprinted over and we waited for the other two to notice they were by themselves and eventually they caught on and figured out where we were and were obviously trying to make their way over so I met them halfway and helped lead the Boss.

After that everyone got on board with the mechanic pretty quickly when they recognized it repeating and we got through it just fine.

I wish we had the luxury of waiting for people to catch on with the Squash and Yeti but the mobs and the timer on both of those makes it really hard to teach- especially since other players can’t hear voice chat unless that have a headset themselves. They need more expressions which we can use as instructions for game mechanics.

@realitysquared I completely agree. It would be great if players could express what they want to their teammates. I would make time limit bosses and other aspects of the game much better.

@realitysquared  It's always good to see people catch on and win. That's part of the issue with Yeti and Squash just as you point out, they're more difficult to deal with in the first place and learning them on the fly almost guarantees a loss to these 2 elite bosses. I've found squash to be slightly easier than yeti, but both have been the vast majority of my Ops failures, which are pretty rare.
