Re: Xbox still overheats and crashes when pvz launching

There is definitely an issue with this game causing the Xbox One X's fans to ramp up during certain animated menu screens.

Here's 2 examples: -

1. When you launch the game and you get past the splash screen, you get to an animated screen where you have to press A to connect to the server. My console's fans immediately ramp up really high as soon as that screen loads, then as soon as the screen changes, they ramp back down again.

2. Another example is the screen you go to after you've connected to the server, where you can see what's new. That also has an animated background. Again, my console's fan ramps up really high as soon as this screen loads in.

I tried to capture video of this, although it's hard to hear just how loud the fan is ramping up, but it's easily at its loudest when on those menu screens: -

A while ago I fitted an internal SSD into my Xbox One X and when I did that, I replaced the rather crusty and badly applied thermal paste with some Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut. Since doing that, the fan in my console never ramps up much in any game except for the new PVZ, and even with that, it only does it during certain animated menu screens. While at those menus, the fan in the console ramps up louder than it does with any other game at any other time, yet during actual gameplay, it's not spinning as fast and is noticeably quieter.

To me, that suggests an issue with those menus which is causing the APU to work harder than it should be, causing it to heat up, then the fan to ramp up in response. I've not experienced any shutdowns related to overheating, but I could certainly see how this might happen. It wouldn't be the first time this has happened with a game. Obviously it's not causing an issue for every Xbox One X user, but there is the silicon lottery to take into account, how well the thermal paste was applied in the factory and what have you.

But yeah, to me there is definitely something amiss with those menu screens.

  • Thank you so much for example. I will head to micro center this weekend to get some decent thermal paste before taking apart my Xbox to enjoy one single game. I have had friends who have in the past worked with frostbite engine who tell me this is to blame. I understand why in house engine, but this is ridiculous. I would love to support EA as much as any developer so hopefully they will fix on next gen. Thanks again for any info all.

First thing is you should never ever have to open a game console and disassemble the hardware and re apply thermal paste . I have a Xbox one x and a Xbox one s and both consoles play the game with no problems. I understand that this is the only game causing your X to overheat but that is not normal I would contact Microsoft for repair but because you opened it yourself you may be stuck

Agreed, no one should be disassembling their console to change/reapply thermal paste.

@Fishboy520 On your Xbox One X, do you hear the fan ramping up during the menu screens, as described in my earlier post, and in this video?.....

Obviously, I am not advising anyone to replace thermal paste as a solution to their console overheating when trying to play this game. I simply said that when I replaced my internal HDD with an SSD, I decided to replace the thermal paste while I was at it, which in my case definitely made the console's fan ramp up less during games. It is not guaranteed to help with overheating problems, it will void any remaining warranty in many countries, and I wouldn't say that it's something a person should even be attempting unless they're experienced with, say, PC building, because if they're not experienced they could mess it up and end up with a console that doesn't work at all.

All of that said, the issue is still whether or not there is some kind of bug during those menu screens that is causing the fan to ramp up, which in Starfire's case may be causing his/her console to shut down. To me, there's is no reason that the fan should be ramping up louder during menu screens than at any other time playing the game.
  • @Fishboy520 Thanks Fish $125 to ship to Microsoft and was told if nothing wrong than I have to pay shipping. EA has not responded with we will look into this. So what else to do. I've played over 600 hours of gw and gw2 . I'm a little addicted to pvz.
  • @EA_Barry Hello this is not resolved. Is there any update on a fix. I would like to play on Xbox X sooner than later. Thanks for any help you can give.
