Scrapped content part 2: gw2

Gw2 scrapped content

Boss mode

Boss mode was mode in gw1 on the xbox 1 and ps4 version of the game where the player played as dave in his van or zomboss in his blimp where they had 2000 health as they roamed around the map dropping healing, spotting, and airstrike supplies to teams.

It was removed because of negative feedback about the mode and its generation exclusitivity.

Concept art and external materials showed dave's RV would've had a Corn Launcher weapon, possibly meaning Boss Mode could've had more attacking abilities or even primary weapons, and could have possibly played more similarly to the Butterhawk.

Scrapped spawnables

Power lily

Her ability was to raise the attack damage of nearby plants using a beam similar to HoverGoat. However, this was unfinished, and she uses Sunflower's Heal Beam in the game. Unknown why she was scrapped but I imagine she saw little use in ops or turf as her positioning couldn't really help the team or other pots.

Magnifying grass

Her ability was to reduce the damage taken by zombie attacks by latching to zombies using a unique beam. Like power lily i imagine this wouldn't really synchronize well in ops or turf.

It's nice to see they considered more pvz 2 plants though.

Fence weed

A pumpkin weed stuck in a wooden fence suppose to be coffin zombies equal. I've seen him in plenty of mods. He's fine but I prefer the vase.

Laser goat

A robotic goat that wears green armor on plants and dark purple on zombies. They used hovergoats kit and icon but had infinite ammo and high double jumps. He can be seen by hacking.  Was meant to be in an unused gamemode called team vanquish goats.

Abilities: Damage buff booster beam- identical to Hover Goat-3000's Damage Buff Booster Beam.

Healbelch - An ability that heals teammates and Laser Goat. It uses the Heal Beam of Science as a placeholder icon and data from the Mega Heal Bomb for the ability in gameplay.

Impulse Grenade - An ability that tosses a grenade that explodes and deals 10 damage. It uses both item and icon from the Gravity Grenade

.

Artwork reveals their names to be laser mohawk (plants) and laser horns (zombies).

According to justin wiebe this was meant to be an alternate mode to cats v dings and was playable on all maps but the backyard. Was coded in frontline fighters dlc.

Unused abilities

An unused spike ability for cactus.

Sprint smash

Torchwood would charge forward and slam his fist into the ground dealing 75 damage to all zombies in the radius.

Bling Potato Nugget Mines

Bling version of Potato Nugget Mines. They have a unique model and effects but have no icon.

Armor Piercing Peach

Unused alternative EMPeach. It doesn't stun, but it deals 50 damage and ignores armor.

Bling Heal Station

Bling version of the Zombie Heal Station. It has a unique model and effects but has no icon

.

Impifier drone

It seems to be a scrapped ability for the Imp. Its primary weapon is a laser and can call in a Cone Strike like Zombot Drone. It had appeared in the E3 trailer for Garden Warfare 2 and is how imp enters the battle.

Future nut

Scrapped variant for the Tall-nut Battlement which would have given plants behind it a damage boost. It has an icon and may have been scrapped due to its range being presumably difficult to recognize. In earlier builds of the game, the ability was usable and had a model that could be seen in game. It appeared to be gray nuts with sunglasses in the launch build. This was probably scrapped since it gave hardline sniper cacti too much power.

Buff Bubble

Scrapped early version of Hover-Goat's Damage Buff Booster Beam. When used, it creates a damage boosting aura around Hovergoat that buffs teammates and weakens enemies.

Techno Shield

Scrapped Hovergoat ability. It's a smaller, wider version of Peel Shield.

Auto Turret

Unused alternate Big Bolt Blaster. It's an AI controlled Big Bolt Blaster that automatically tracks and shoots at plants. This may have been an inspiration for the Heavy Helpers

Cannon Rodeo Exit

A unused ability of Captain Deadbeard it is not known what he did but it could be that when the player is in a chase he uses the ability to throw himself away.

Bosses

Zombot was already scrapped back in gw1 but was reconsidered until scrapped again.

Imitater

An unused plant boss hunt that would happens in the story missions. It is unknown when he would show up. Bait was stick of butter.

He transformed into zombies bosses with his color scheme.

Pup and wolf

A z mech that is also identified as a boss.

It comes with its own Imp called Renegade Imp in the coding. It was originally intended to appear in story Boss Hunts. Its bait was the Cyber Jerky. It would have had 500 health and had 3 abilities:

Cluster Cannons: Same effect as the Missile Madness of the regular Z-Mech, seems to home in a lot more.

Smokey Motors: It would summon an airstrike the rains down 5 Zombie Stink Clouds.

Gravity Missile: It would launch 5 Gravity Grenades at its target(s)

.

Cyber jerky description: Tough piece of silicon coated cyber jerky.

Super chili bean

He was originally intended to appear in story Boss Hunts similar to other bosses.

A reskinned super bean that was red wearing a poncho and sombrero.

Its bait was a bottle of hot sauce. Description:

Super Hot. Super Hot. Super Hot

.

Its attacks have red effects instead of blue effects. Has an icon as well. He has his own abilities as well, and they are:

Chili Laserbean - A more powerful version of Super Bean's Laserbean ability.

Chili Teleport - A teleport ability, although it does not actually work due to the boss' unfinished nature.

Explosive Teleport - A teleport ability that also launches Chili Bean Bombs.

Chili Warp - Its warp ability, similar to Super Bean's warp ability.

Chili Charge - Similar to Super Bean's Overbean ability, except it does way more damage.

Chili Twirl - Very unfinished, seems to do no damage at all

.

Fiddles the crab

A zombie boss.

He has very little leftovers in the game's files. What remains is its icon and placeholders for its appearance in the Boss Hunt. Its bait is a pair of Swim Trunks. Description: Blindingly bright swim trunks. Like, so bright.

Orange juice robot

A plant boss.

Similar to Fiddles the Crab, it has very little leftovers in the game's files. What remains is its icon and placeholders for its appearance in the Boss Hunt. Its bait is the Imbalanced Breakfast

.

Beet boxers

They were intended to appear in Graveyard Ops. They have very little leftovers in the game files, with the exception of placeholders, an icon, and a quest description for defeating them.

Description: "The beet boxers are sick again. Zomboss wants the virus for himself so he can spread it among other plants".

Early sasquatch used a soup can and was on other maps.

Wishing well

It was part of a scrapped donation system featured in the game, where players could travel to different Backyard Battlegrounds and leave Stars in other players' wishing well. However, this was removed due to cheating and exploit issues that might have occurred.

Tale of the taco unused content

A telescope wouldve let you communicate with the giant taco which would give you earnable rewards potentially meant for bfn.

Propulsive Salsa mode. This mode would've been a take on Team Vanquish, and would have appeared during Week 2 of Tale of the Taco. For reasons likely relating to the release of bfn, it was cut at the last minute. The gameplay of the mode is similar to normal Team Vanquish, except there are salsa pickups hidden around the map. These pickups would have given players a lot of buffs, such as low gravity.

Two unused story mode themes for the backyard for both sides that kinda sounds like gw1.

Great white north has three unused zombie takeover themes as version 2 is the one in game.

Dr zomboss

He was an npc you would interact with and while this model is still seen you can't physically talk to him.

Crazy dave

A full crazy dave model with idle animations you could talk to was cut from the game.

Engineer had buildables that allowed a cone strike airstrike to be used and one that buffed zombies or bots around it.

Cheetos

The sponsor characters and abilities from gw1 are in the files.

Gw2 has so much scrapped content is wonder if I even got it all. It makes since however since gw2 has the most content of any pvz game and not every idea would work out.

I was a ps3 player so I never knew boss mode existed for a while. I can see why it wasn't really popular though.

Power lily and magnifying grass sound interesting but I can see why they were cut but maybe if they were kit oriented like dark flower they could work.

Fence weed is cool and all but I think vase works better.

The idea of a goat fighting for plants would make more sense if it was hypnotized and is do think it was better to scrap them for hover goat and cats v dinos.

Sprint smash could be okay. Armor piercing peach sounds like an awesome alt.

Imagine if an imp variants mech was the impifier drone.

I imagine future nut was too good for campers and that's why it was scrapped. Could be cool if reworked like less defense for itself but higher resistance for players behind it.

Glad they didnt just give hover goat citrons abilities.

Imitater should be made a regular boss who has only half the zombie boss health and is very vulnerable otherwise to not make him a pain to fight in ops.

The other bosses would be interesting to see oneday like the crab or beet boxers.

Renegade imp should just be a variant.

I can see how the wishing well would be abused but it would be nice to help friends and other players more in some way.

I feel like the music should've been toggleable.

I understand why engineers buildings werent used as uplink bot was added.

It would be nice to see dr zomboss and crazy dave take more active roles in the story.

Reading through these makes me sad that the series is more than likely dead

  • Boss mode never seemed very popular in GW although I did use it when I wanted a less frantic PvP experience. You could use it in Ops too which I always found a bit weird. Adding more stuff to it could have been cool. It's not my favorite way to play, but I didn't mind it.

Power Lily and Magnifying Grass sounds like they would be better as playable characters, or a mobile spawnable. Making them pots means you greatly restrict your mobility which can be a problem. I like the ideas though.

Fence Weed; agreed on liking the vase weeds more. They could have had pumpkin be a pot boost thing where you plant it on a pot to give it more armor, or of course, make it an ability for a character based on Jack-O-Lanterns or Pumpkins.

I've seen the Laser Goat on some videos of people hacking to use it. Sounds like with some work, it could be a variant of the Hovergoat.

Never saw that spike ability for Cacti, wonder what it was going to do.

I saw the icon for Torchwood's Sprint Smash. Wish we got it as I love how it sounds, although maybe the damage should go down a bit, as it gives him a big boost to mobility.

Not a huge fan of bling abilities, and you hardly ever see potato nugget mines, but odd we didn't get it as it's just a new skin for an already existent ability.

Armor Piercing Peach sounds cool, but EMPeach is one that modifies an ability that needs some attention in the first place, but I like alternate abilities, so if they used it with any necessary re-balancing, that would be good.

Not much to say about Bling Heal Station. We have the Bling Armored Heal Station already, which I rarely use. Bling stuff doesn't hurt the game at all, but isn't something I find myself interested in either.

Impifier Drone sounds like an earlier concept for the mech or perhaps a replacement for one of the other abilities? While we have the parrots in GW2, I still miss the GW Engineer drones and I don't see multiple characters with different drones being a problem, as too many at once is actually not a great idea! That being said, it doesn't seem needed when they could just bring engineer drones back as alternates to the big bolt blaster.

Future Nuts are quite cool in PvZ2. I get why a damage boost for a character that snipes primarily didn't make it. Maybe make it more like the PvZ2 version where it's emitter remains after being reduced to zero health and it reforms over time?

Buff Bubble could be a cool alternate ability for Hovergoat.

Techno Shield could also be an alternate ability. Maybe for Hovergoat, maybe for some other zombie character like Super Brainz (replacing turbo twister perhaps), or a new character not in the game yet.

Auto Turret does sound like a precursor to heavy helper, but hopefully would have been less of an issue than heavy helper has turned out to be. I still prefer the drones for the engineers as it makes them less like the TF2 engineers so they feel more distinct. I like engineer in TF2, one of my most played classes in fact, but making our engineers different from them, while being just similar enough feels better.

Cannon Rodeo Exit could even use the same animation/cannon, but instead of firing at the plants, you fire yourself away from the recoil! Maybe it has one shot and that shot breaks the cannon and throws you backward.

I've seen videos of the imitator.  A nice throwback to the original PvZ. I imagine it swapping boss types during the fight as part of the mechanices.

Pup and wolf/renegade mech. I've seen the renegade mech in some videos. Like its look a lot.

Super Chili Bean is another I've seen videos/art on. Hopefully less obnoxious than the regular super bean!

I had heard not only about Fiddles in GW2 but also plans for it to be in BfN. Neither came true unfortunately. Love the idea of a giant robot crab to fight.

Orange Juice Robot sounds like a big Citron. Perhaps one of Dave's ideas went a little too far? Of course that seems to happen a lot...

Beet Boxers sound like a giant version of the PvZ2 plant. Curious about the story on this one.

Wishing Well does sound kind of neat, like a way to give new players a boost, but I get why it wasn't in the game. People love to exploit things in these kinds of games, it's why solo gnome bomb gives so few coins beyond the quests these days, but I do like this concept.

I posted a picture I got from somewhere with the Taco still on the town hall elsewhere as I loved how they kept us in suspense and had that awesome player/dev interaction. More stuff for that whole idea would have been amazing.

More story mode stuff to do would be very welcome.

Having more interactions with our glorious leaders (Dave and Zomboss) would just make me love the game more. PvZ has such massive potential for getting us into the world better than so many other games, having more of that would be fantastic.

I'm not really surprised that we lost the crossover characters like Chester Chomper and Doctor Chester, but I wouldn't have minded them coming along to GW2 either.

Letting Engineer and Rose build more stuff would be cool.

A lot of this sounds like it could be great fun and I'm sad we didn't see some of these, especially more boss hunts. Obviously not every idea makes the final cut, but some of these would have been great to see, and some seem like we should have seen them as they are just reskins, like the bling abilities. They cut support to GW2 too early and to be honest, they could have just kept updating it instead of making BfN and a lot of us would be happier and the game would be more lively, even if it is still beloved and played a lot to this day.

@Iron_Guard8 They really should'ce delayed bfn and kept adding back maps to gw2 as walnut hills for all its flaws (which coupd be fixed with more time as mods prove) was very well recieved and players were hyped for what was next. They could use the voting order to decide which maps would be added faster than others. This would've given gw2 a proper send off (and give the mystery portal an actually good set rotation) and actually build hype for bfn rather than just dropping it out of nowhere as now the founders trailer would just be the announcement trailer for the future.

I think the problem i have with any turret classes in non tf2 shooters is that there's no fun with it its just plop down the turret get 30 kills and do nothing creative with it unlike tf2 having dispensers and teleporters as well as the wrangler and rescue ranger which leads to downright insane sentry placements other games don't allow alongside engineer being able to be combat focused with his different weapons like the gunslinger.

An infinite nut alt for cactus that has less health but regens unless completely destroyed could work well.

Rodeo exit can be the compromise between the cannon and anchors away.

The impfier drone could be a cool cross between boss mode and a variant if they put in effort.

Beet boxers icon appeared to be a three headed hydra kinda deal as they were taped together or something.

Power lily and magnyfying grass have to either be playable or be a kit ability otherwise they won't work well.

Some of these shouldve been added like imitater as he would be a great boss and could break the no zombie vs zombies rule.

This is fascinating stuff! I did actually know about a lot of this stuff from reading through some of the scrapped content a while ago. I would have liked to see more bling variants of the basic abilities, such as Pea Gatling and regular Heal Station, rather than having to use the Retro or Armored Heal Station to get the bling variant. If bling abilities had slight boosts, rather than just being reskins of a regular ability (excluding Bling Pylon Mech), that would be nice to see and they would be more widely used as well.

Some of these alternate scrapped effects seem like they would have had a huge impact on the game. An imp controlling a drone instead of a mech would be very different to what I am used to, for instance.

If we got a new shooter at any point, some of this content could be inspired for additions in that new game.
