Scrapped content part 3: bfn

Bfn scrapped content

Bfn has quite a few of these since we all know the game was officialy cancelled not even a year after launch and had a shadow cancellation even before that.

Characters

Berry brigade

As of the January 2020 patch, some assets related to the character such as the weapon data and model were added to the game files, but were removed in the March 2020 patch.

Iceberg Lettuce

Since the November 2019 patch, there has been a character select icon in the game data that simply says "L." However, this has been revealed to be the placeholder icon for the Ice Plant as of the January 2020 patch, as the filename has been renamed to that. She even has an partially finished model.

As of the May 2020 patch, or CU5 (Content Update 5), character models, weapon data, upgrade data, and ability data for this plant exist in the game files. However, it has been confirmed that she has been scrapped due to the game's end of support.

Super bean

In the July 2020 patch, The files for him were added to the playable characters folder, complete with a primary weapon, 3 abilities (Cape Twirl, Team Shield, and Warp), and one passive ability, to jump long distances when the jump button is held down. He already appears in the game as a boss along with its cape twirl and warp abilities. The Team Shield ability seems to be specific to the playable version of the character, as it can give nearby plant characters force fields to protect them from a certain amount of damage. He was considered playable before wildflower but scrapped since wildflower required less time.

There are also references to other playable characters in the game, such as Cabbage, Squash, Mini Gargantuar, Toxic Zombie, and Browncoat. However, not much is known other than their internal names, and for some their weapon data.

Toxic Zombie would supposedly have had a chargeable sniper rifle called the "Needle Rifle" and a "Sticky Grenade" attack.

Mini Gargantuar had a primary attack that would have involved him aiming his weapon forwards, which would have likely been similar to Gargantuar's power pole attack, and a secondary attack that would have aimed his weapon downwards, which would likely have been something similar to Gargantuar's slam attack.

Browncoat, also known as "Eric", had 8 possible primaries in the game's code, one of which allowed him to throw vinyl records that roll along the ground when unzoomed and throw records like frisbees when zoomed in, similarly to peashooters scrapped legendary upgrade.

Cabbage had an alternate name in the game's code, "Catapult". This may have meant that it would have been similar to the Cabbage-pult from the tower defense games.

Gnome tag

An unreleased playable character that has a complete model, fully functional weapon, and abilities. It has 340 health and three abilities: Warp, Hammer Slam, and Grenade. While sprinting, the Gnome Cave theme song from gw2 plays.

The primary weapon has a rate of fire of 420 RPM and deals 9.5 damage, with an occasional damage increase to 10.

The Warp ability allows it to warp 45 meters (147.64 feet) away from the current position, three times farther than Scientist's Warp, and has a recharge time of 6 seconds.

The Hammer Slam ability currently deals no damage and has a recharge time of 15 seconds.

The Grenade ability deals 175 direct damage and has a recharge time of 16 seconds

.

Bosses

Super Chili Bean

A scrapped boss from gw2 who was planned to debut in Bfn under the new name of "Mexi-Bean".

Captain Smasher

A boss from a Boss Hunt quest in gw2 was planned to return to Bfn

A scrapped boss from Garden Warfare 2 that was supposed to be released in Battle for Neighborville but it is unknown for which game mode or content this boss would have been part of.

Sasquatch

A boss from Boss Hunt in gw2 was planned to return in bfn

Chompzilla

A plant hero from heroes who was planned to be released in Bfn.

The Yeti King

A boss from Boss Hunt in gw2 that was planned to return to Bfn.

Reworked naval laser and turbo twister.

As of the May 2020 patch, there are some weapon data for a new version of Navel Laser and Turbo Twister.

The new version of Navel Laser would have allowed the player to fire the weapon manually but the weapon would have had 30 rounds. The upgrade is unfinished as the cooldown will still be triggered after 6 seconds due to it reusing the same weapon data as the current Navel Laser. It also has 7 charge stages, possibly intended to allow the player to fire the weapon before the weapon is fully charged, at the cost of having less ammo to fire.

The new version of Turbo Twister would have had a longer cooldown and caused Super Brainz to move in a circular pattern while using the ability, but dealt more damage and lasts longer

.

Abilities.

Hey you and astrouanut dock.

Acorn and space cadets would call allt acorns/cadets to their position.

Cannon rodeo

It is unknown if this ability was cannon rodeo as the icon shows him being shot out of it. This was scrapped in favor of anchors away.

Festivus activity sheet.

For Feastivus 2019, multiple activity sheets were released. On three of these sheets are multiple icons for abilities that seem to be from an earlier build. It is unknown why these icons were used instead of the current ones. Noticeable parts of these sheets include -

Unused Hey You! and Cannon Rodeo ability icons.

A Kernel Corn icon left completely unused. Its position makes it likely this was meant for Shuck Shot.

Hyper Jump Thump facing a different direction than the finished icon.

Rocket Ride's color is blue rather than purple.

Sprint Tackle's color is blue rather than pink.

Fung Fu's coloring is slightly darker than its finished icon.

A different activity sheet shows a Fung-Fu icon with one less surrounding shadow

.

Cut mechanics

Confidence

A cut acorn mechanic referenced in two u used upgrades.

Bravado:

Gain large amount of confidence randomly when earning a vanquish.

Unknown effect, it appears to utilize a scrapped mechanism called "confidence" according to the description. 2 points.

Determination: Gain more confidence when dealing critical damage.

Unknown effect, it appears to utilize a scrapped mechanism called "confidence" according to the description. 3 points.

Damage falloff

A means of reducing weapon's effectiveness at longer range for balancing purposes, but is almost wholly absent in bfn for no good reason, save for the Sunbeam and Scientist's primary weapon, although the latter has an inverse falloff instead, where the damage is higher at longer range because a shotgun should of course do better at longer range; logic.

Two of the unused upgrades present in the game data—Carbine Rounds and Increased Bullet Range—suggest that damage falloff was meant to be added into the game, but was cut during the development, as these upgrades increase the damage falloff start and end distances

Upgrade Gardenator/Grave-o-Matic IIIEven more Base Health1 Blue Star.

Garden/Graveyard Defense IIIncreases Defensive Abilities.10 Blue Stars.

Man I knew bfn was bare bones but holy crap this is the bare bones of bare bones. So much of this should've been base content.

The upgrades seem stupid as so many seem redundant or stupidly overpowered.

Leaving such a vital mechanic like falloff to upgrades is so stupid and shouldn't have even been considered wtf.

Instead of introducing gimmicks to ops maybe just maybe they should've actually given a crap about making the enemy and ally variety have more content than THE FIRST GAME.

This game could've easily gone two more years in development at least.

It's just so frustrating to go from the overall stable area of gw and then freefall off a cliff here.

  • I still wonder if BfN could have eventually surpassed GW2 for me had they kept working on it, fixing its still glaring issues, and added more new characters (and presumably, not added the swarm characters as they wouldn't have needed filler characters).

I really liked the datamined video for Berry Brigade as the character looked and sounded fun, even in its incomplete form. Absolutely loved the idea of this character.

What really bugs me about Iceberg Lettuce is that we never got her and she was even even closer to being done than Berry Brigade was. And the teams are still unbalanced to this day.

Super Bean should remain as a boss, but I saw videos on this idea as a character too. While I don't like the swarm characters, I'd not be a huge fan of this as a playable character either.

The other characters you mention all sound like they needed some work but could have been welcome additions to the roster. BfN always felt like they were trying to go more towards OW and Paladins rather than TF2 which GW and GW2 more closely resembled as far as characters, making them more 'heroic' and individualistic, much like PvZ: Heroes too. We just lacked enough characters for that work out well, especially after seeing how beloved the variants are.

More game modes, even if only for the portal would have been welcome, and gnome tag is no exception. I'm not the biggest fan of playing characters we can't level up, much like the robots in cats vs. dinos, but too many of the portal modes are lackluster at best, and a brand new one with new ideas would be much better than say, boss turf takeover is.

I would have loved more bosses and a rework of the pickle boss a bit so its less obnoxious. Had the game kept going, maybe we could have even gotten special events to announce when new bosses were added to the game.

I'm all for alternate abilities, even if some like shuck shot in GW2, still need some work so sad we didn't see those.

We really needed more events in BfN to shake things up a bit. The pie hat quest was the only one we ever really got.

I had not heard of the confidence thing or them adding the very much needed damage fall off to BfN. The fact that we never got it is still baffling as there stopgap ideas to fill in for this crucial mechanic didn't work out and even then weren't fully implemented. Damage drop off should have been a key part of the game's core systems from very early on if not day one. It's that important.

That is a lot of unused upgrades. I had heard that they had a small team for the game, much smaller than it should have been, and seeing those missing as well as the ideas for Valenbrainz. That spin vanquish heal for only 1 point sticks out as ludicrously OP. Even a small heal instead of full should have been at least 3 points, especially when one considers how much damage it does!

Ops needed a lot more work. I know several of our fellow PvZ shooter friends were very upset about Ops in BfN, and I see why. The blue star thing could have helped, but so much needed to make them fun and interesting. They are so basic compared to Ops in the GW games and buggy (Super Bean losing its icon so you have to hunt for him, 'huge' special waves that are smaller than normal waves, bosses stuck in terrain, and so on), that it's obvious they didn't have enough time/people to get them made right.

BfN could have and should have been amazing, but it's painfully obvious that the team was too small and not given enough time to get it made to the standards they and we wanted. It's a crying shame.

@Iron_Guard8 It's clear that they haphardly slapped this game together on top of the scrapped pve game. It's even more baffling since gw2 was made in a short time as well but it stands out with much more features and content than the others. They could've easily saved time by keeping assests from 1 and 2 for a 3rd gw and they blew it.

Iceberg lettuce was teased for so long and then nothing happened with her. Shame.

I just don't really like playing npcs as characters as it feelsnlike it could've gone to a more intersting character.

The new characters were sadly a big selling point they kept pushing that they didn't deliver. I get they wanted this game to be live service with years of content but even big dev teams fail at them ala halo infinite.

The lack of game modes in bfn is astonishing. They had so many to pull from but ended up pulling existing gamemodes because they forgot how basic good game design worked in Suburbination.

Bfn is just sad all around. For new fans its just not a complete or competent game and old fans wonder why so many features were taken back and why this direction was taken in the first place.

Wow, this is a lot of content that was scrapped, or that was going to make it into the game, but did not because of the cancellation or whatnot. I really do wish that the content that was close to making it to the game, Iceberg Lettuce for instance, actually make a debut, but unfortunately this is not the case. I wonder if there were any other additional cosmetics or customisations that were scrapped as well which was not mentioned here.

The amount of content that was scrapped showed us how much potential the game had and how well the game could have turned out if the new content made it into the game. This is a great reason why another shooter would be excellent, as some of the unused and scrapped content could be used in that game, such as Iceberg Lettuce or Berry Brigade!
