I use 1600x900 personally, but that's not the way the industry looks at it.
The industry looks at it as "Not everyone uses a monitor big enough to warrant a split screen option." One of my friends uses a triple monitor setup with proper wide screen displays and he agrees that split screen for PCs is a stupid idea.
So, the ones that do play on a TV must suffer because not everyone plays on a TV?
Of course playing split screen across 3 wide monitors would be stupid. However, playing with 2 friends, each with their own monitor doesn't seem so bad. Or maybe even 6 players, each with a split screen.
Doesn't seem as if it would be THAT hard to implement, you really only have to render the world once, and then have the multiple viewpoints of the players.
A proper PC can handle 4 games, running simultaneously. Linus has done it with 7.
