This he been mentioned on the Reddit before as well. I think spotting has a place to a point but its too strong right now, especially as you point out, against Chompers and other characters that have to reach point blank range to be effective.
In GW1 in Boss Mode the little RADARs you dropped give spotting icons and they were reasonably cheap to place but were also destroyable and would eventually time out. Not sure where they want to go with this but it should be reduced in effectiveness against opposing players from where it is now.
I like it for finding campers, other then that I think the audio cues should be enough. Maybe an upgrade option in GW3...cloaking for some chars...mic drop.
