Switch PvZ can't go online, connect Account

Switch version, just downloaded, on girlfreinds switch. When it prompts to play online she is unable to sign in, almost as if the 'a' button is disabled. All other buttons work fine. She can play in offline mode. She will also scan the QR and it will respond to that but after she signs in on her phone it won't let her go past the screen. Again the 'a' button not working.
