@stukapooka Yes I totally agree. I loved using the different play styles of the different ability variants - I found that specific ones shined in really particular situations. For example, Mood Shield is great when you’re in heated combat because while it didn’t last as long, it was more durable and you would know when it was getting close to being destroyed. And to show them off as well.
@Shadowphinx101 Most of the legendary upgrades drastically change the weapons of the characters, like you mentioned. Now, while this may not class as “new weapons”, at least it’s something different which somewhat resembles new variants. Legendary upgrade work similarly.

I think the best way to solve this issue while keeping BFN as it is style-wise, but vastly improve it is to rework the perk system.
There are many opportunities in perks to change a character's playstyle in many ways. Perks give options to the players and a lot of creativity if they allow it. Variants are essentially a set of perks combined together to give a player a new, predetermined playstyle, while actual perks leave things up for the imagination and flexibility.
However, perks in BFN are not ambitious, and that is a massive problem.
I will give an example on how they should work or should be like.
Kernel Corn has an upgrade called Mob Cobs which allows him to penetrate enemies and deal damage to them. This is most times useless and not used because it is rare this occurs and his shots are not that wide.
How about we change this:
If a player equips Mob Cobs, Cob Blasters horizontally scales up (widens) by a certain amount and is able to penetrate through enemies. This makes it so the shots have an easier time hitting more players and penetrating through groups. This would make the upgrade much better and different. However, the damage would be increased by 1 or 2, but the fire rate would be lowered overall increasing the TTK. This would make him more focused on groups and the objective, while making him worse for 1v1's. This isn't that complex to do, but due how many perks there are, it would be a drastic overhaul.
What About Legendary Upgrades?
Well, I would think legendary upgrades would have less downsides, or need less support from other perks to be efficient.
Let's edit Shogun Guard For a Reference Point.
Shogun Guard has Cob Blasters altered to be a slower firing weapon, but with a personal shield. However, the shield needs to be better and if we consider all the other perks being improved, then we need to add more to this.
The Personal Shield is dilated to an increased size to only cover Corn's front. It's health would be 100, so it is weaker than all the other tank shields. Corn himself would lose 25 max health. Additionally, the primary loses 1 damage when the shield is activated, but regains the damage when it is deactivated. If the shield is broken, then Corn gains 15% or 20% damage resistance at the cost of a bit of speed from walking and sprinting. Additionally, he does 1 extra damage per shot, but loses it when the boost deactivates. Reactivating the shield during the boost will cancel the boost, and there would be a visual indication of the duration of the boost.
In simpler terms:
Shield Covers Corn's Entire Front And Has 100 HP
While Shield is Up, Corn Loses 1 Damage Per Shot
When Shield Is Destroyed, Corn Gets Damage Resistance And Gains 1 Damage (To The Base Damage), At The Cost of Speed
Reactivating the Shield Cancels The Boost If the Boost is Still Active.
Corn Would Have 25 Less Health With This Upgrade (Regular Should Have 150, With This Upgrade 125)
