On the new Pogo experience, chat is turned off by default when you join a game, so if you don't want to chat, you don't have to turn it on. You turn it on by clicking the talk bubble on the menu on the right-hand side.

If you no longer wish to chat and don't want to interrupt your gameplay, you can click on the 3 dots and select Do Not Disturb.
