CANASTA

I've been playing canasta for as long as I have been a member of POGO. But I am very frustrated now because I have been playing for months and months without ever winning a game, impossible!! I think the algorithms or maybe something else comes into play here.  I'm as competitive as the next person but for me not to win in months is not right!!! Please take a look and let me know what I can or you can do, please.

Thanks,

  • Hello! I understand how frustrating that must be. Canasta is such a strategic game, and it can be really challenging to win consistently, especially with all the variables involved. Sometimes, it helps to review strategies and adjust your gameplay a bit.

Here are a few tips that might improve your chances:

Watch the Discard Pile: Pay close attention to what your opponents are discarding. This can give you valuable insights into their strategies and the cards they need.

Build Incrementally: Focus on creating multiple partial melds rather than completing one big meld right away. This keeps your options open for forming Canastas later.

Plan for Freezing the Pile: If you sense your opponents depend on picking up the discard pile, consider freezing it by discarding a wild card or a red three strategically.

Hold Your Cards: If the discard pile is small, it might be better to hold onto your cards and wait for a bigger play later. Don’t rush to meld unless it's part of your strategy.

Use Bluffing Tactics: Discard cards that mislead your opponents about your strategy. For example, discard a high-value card in a suit you’re actually building to throw them off.

Plan Your Melds: Think ahead about which cards you want to meld and which you want to hold onto for potential Canastas.

Avoid Overcommitting Early: Don't meld all your cards too quickly. Keeping some cards in your hand allows you to adapt to the changing dynamics of the game.

Bury Cards: If you have a card that your opponent's seems to need, try to bury it in the discard pile by layering it under less useful cards.

Discard Wisely: Be mindful of what cards you're discarding. Avoid giving your opponent's opportunities to pick up useful cards.

Play Defense: If you see your opponents are close to forming a Canasta, try to block them by holding onto key cards they might need. If you sense your opponents are close to going out, focus on preventing them from picking up the pile or forming more Canastas.

Know When to Pick Up the Pile: Only pick up the discard pile if it gives you a significant advantage, like forming a Canasta or completing a meld.

Don't lose hope! Sometimes, it's just a matter of adjusting your approach and maybe a bit of luck 🍀
