I just tested it.
Do NOT get the extra energy from the first section. This immediately caused the save error. I have now verified this twice.
(Note: you can claim the extra coins from the first level. However, I would do that last before you exit the game.)

Why isn't support fixing this issue?
I've had the same issue. I have played the game on two different devices with the same results. I have also chosen the coin option and have lost them when I exit the game after saving progress on both devices as well.
You are correct. You exit and the coins are lost.
Moral of the story, do not claim coins or items on the first level.
Since I have done this I have not lost any items or lives.
