Limit to number of non-upgraded residential buildings you can have in your city?

I've a level 20 town with 46 residential buildings which break down as following:

39 skyscrapers

5 upper mid-size buildings (generally had 4 or 5 out of the 6 upgrades a building can go through)

2 homes (1 out of the 6 upgrades a building can go through)

The 5 upper mid-size buildings were built before the 2 homes. I've deliberately left them as non-skyscrapers because I want a bit of variety in my city.

Up until now homes would generally offer me the option to upgrade them within 30 minutes of them being built at the absolute most, but these last 2 homes have being there for probably going on 24 hours and neither have offered me the option to upgrade them. Has this happened to other players? If so, how did you resolve the issue? Surely the game isn't trying to bulldoze me in to having a city consisting entirely of either skyscrapers and/or two bedroomed homes?

I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game as well as bulldozing the homes and rebuilding them, both with no effect.

You can only have 5 zones available for upgrade at any one time. That does not include zones upgrading for the first time. So you can have 5 mid level buildings and 3 undeveloped zones with builders hat icons on them. 8 in total. If you upgrade one building, in the time it is being built, the hat icon will switch to another building ready for upgrade. You have no choice over this. Hope it makes sense. This is one of my massive problems with the game, I, like you, want variety to build a realistic city and want to keep some of the buildings you see in the upgrade process, houses, condos, tower blocks, trailer parks, medium scrapers etc. I don't want all glass skyscrapers that look the same just to chase population. You basically have no control over what buildings to upgrade, which is not good. I downloaded the game after looking at the advertising, which shows building variety and if you visit Daniels City you see it there as well. You have no way to achieve this and it annoys me. I want the developers to allow us to toggle the builders hat icon and allow us to choose which buildings to keep or upgrade. Then I will spend money on parks or more content such as landmarks or specific buildings. Such a disappointment, this game could be amazing, the graphics are great but I'm so bored of only having a choice of 6-7 glass skyscrapers I'm on the verge of deleting the app. Cheers.

  • That's rather unfortunate to say the least. I was planning on building up this entire campus around the university I have in my city with the luxury mid-size buildings acting as different faculties and also having luxury mid-size buildings along the beach front as premium beach-front property but it looks like I'm going back to the drawing board on that one.

The 5 non-skyscraper limit is fine for single level cities, but once you start reaching 20+, there really should be some extension on that. Goodness only knows what it's like for cities that are level 40+. 200 plus skyscrapers is just going to be a monstrous city with very little variety.

    Hi,

This happened to me also at level 20 this morning after upgraded the remaining 2 buildings.  I tried to demolish 2 buildings because I have 2 more residentials to build but because I do not have enough water supply.  I demolished 2 existing buildings, but the game did not give me back options to build new buildings.  I am stuck now.

Anyone can help?  I tried to contact EA help, but not useful

Surly Codger - We had very similar intentions! Around my university, I built a nice little "college district" with around 6 or so tier-2 upgraded homes (the nice mansion-like homes with the fences around them). They were meant to be frat/sorority houses, etc. I saved up coin for days and days to add a crazy amount of parks along with an amphitheater and some other odd & ends. It turned out amazing! BUT.....as soon as I decided to start leveling up to unlock the landmark buildings for another idea I have, there are no other buildings available to upgrade other than the nice homes I don't want to part with : ( I can't believe they designed the game without an option to either pick & choose which buildings you want to upgrade, or at least skip one every now & then. The only way around it I've seen so far is to keep doing disaster challenges until it destroys the area you want to keep, which opens up other buildings to upgrade. It's a terrible design flaw which they need to change ASAP!!!! I was going to give the game 5 stars before that, now it's a weak 2 in my opinion. Who wants a city with nothing but the same skyscrapers? I expected so much more from a game with the SimCity title! : (
