Simcity 4 Screen Displacement Issues

I own SimCity 4 Deluxe, which I bought off of Steam. I have had no issues in the past with the game and have often enjoyed playing it. I haven't played it in a while since around January this year, but decided to play it earlier this week after having similar issues with SimCity 3000 (which I bought from GoG). I did not expect the same problem with SimCity 4, but did.

The issue is that it causes me a headache by displacing my monitor's screen display, moving part of the right hand side to the left and shifting it up a little while making grainy lines like some old movie/film; in the game, the graphics appear grainy as well with lines, and sometimes only one half of the displaced screen appears normal.

I have no idea why this happens or why the problem persists when the game is closed. I cannot provide actual screenshots off my computer to show this, as I suspect it will appear to be normal, so the images were taken with my phone's camera.  Any help would be appreciated here, as I am annoyed and deeply saddened by this happening; if anyone could suggest what to do with the issue this causes with SimCity 3000, it would be mightly appreciated.

  • The problem might be your graphics or your processor. There may be lag, or you don't have good graphics. SimCity 4 is pretty old, but I don't think that's the problem.

Thank you for replying.  I don't think the processor or my graphics are the issue, as the computer that I use has been the same when I run SimCity 4 - both a few months ago when there was no issue, and when the issue began cropping up.

I have, however, figured that it might be something to do with my monitor and the colour setting it uses.  A few other old games that I got - Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 & 2, Gabriel Knight 3, are examples - gave me the same issues when I tried playing them recently.  Finding an answer over the internet was hard, but...  anyone facing this issue could try one of the following which I discovered can help:

    1.  Try playing the game(s) that causes the issue in Windowed Mode.
    2. If the above doesn't work, go to the Display Settings on the computer, look up those for your monitor, and reduce the colour setting down.

No 2 works for me for this issue mainly - I have colour set to 32 bit with my monitor, but found that by reducing it to 16 bit, games that cause the displacement now display properly without issue or any further displacement, and can have their resolution changed as well.
