Simcity 5 - Bootcamp?

So, I have a fully upgraded late 2013 retina MBP. I like Simcity, and I'm (unlike so many others-I'm lucky) not prone to *a lot* of lag issues. However, I have three main problems.

1. Retina display incompatibility (you guys can ignore this, because I know that EA has not added official support for the Retina Display)

2. Thunderbolt Display incompatibility (The Thunderbolt display is widescreen, but Simcity only covers part of the screen. the rest is black - like playing a 4:3 aspect ratio game on a 16:9 aspect ratio monitor)

3. Graphics issues - I think I have the proper specs to run Simcity flawlessly @ high graphics settings, but it lags when I set any settings to high. I can run at a good 50 FPS on medium settings on my laptop, but anything higher or even playing on my Thunderbolt monitor would decrease FPS drastically and induce lag.

Now, I run OS X. I've heard of other people's problems with Simcity being solved when they run Simcity on Windows, but I want to make sure if it's actually true. My question is:

Will running Windows 8.1 with bootcamp solve any of the three problems above?

Thanks for the help.

    1. Not sure if the windows version of this game supports the retina display.  I know it supports my 1440p monitor (2560x1440).

    2. Windows supports Thunderbolt, so that shouldn't be an issue.

    3. I think you have only integrated graphics and doubt you can run even all medium settings.  I think you have the Intel HD5200 and I have an Hd4600 and I can get partial medium, but not all medium on my 1080p monitor.  If you lower your graphics very low, you may get some high graphics settings.  If set to retina resolution I don't think even all low would be very capable.

But windows 8 will run it without issues otherwise.  But not much better than what you should be getting already.  Remember, integrated video have poor performance.  Not to mention laptops are low powered inherently as they need to be run on batteries.  Windows is game oriented, so it will run the any Mac games better at same specs.  At least 25% better, if not more.

Well, in terms of integrated graphics, I never run that (yeah, yeah, iris pro graphics -_-). I run my external graphics card, Nvidia GeForce GT 750M with 2 gigs video memory. That's why I'm asking; it seems like a really beefy card, so will running Windows boost my performance?

It will run better than Mac OS X buy far.

I suspect your GT 750m is about the same as my GTX 650 desktop model and I can barely get all medium at 1080p.  It starts lagging a little late game when mapo starts filling up and traffic gets really busy.  But for the most part very playable.

Expect retina or anything higher than 1080p to be slower.

And no, it's not a real beefy card.  It has 384 shader processors.  AMD has the same for on-chip integrated video themselves.  For comparison my GTX 780 has 2304 shader processors(max settings, no lag).  My GTX 650 Ti has 768 Shader Processor (twice as my GTX 650) all medium, no lag whatsoever, even while recording in-game video.

so basically you have standard integrated graphics with the 750m, although it is much, much faster than Intel graphics which are always way slower than everyone else.  but the minimum for AMD (ATI).

But expect at least a 25% increase overall proformance in Windows than Mac OS X.

Also, thunderbolt may be tied to integrated video.  Not 100% sure, but I know the Intel chipset is optimized for Thunderbolt.  You may want to check settings, as you can switch from integrated (HD 5200) to dedicated (GT 750m)

If you go lower than 1080p, you can go higher graphical settings. 1366 x 768 is the Nvidia recommenmdation for running this card for the best performce.  If you install the GeForce Experience, iot should automatically setup the best performance for a constant 30 fps or better game.  It'll start out higher, but get around 30 late game.

    Hi,

I have a macbook with a nvidia 8600M GT. I'm now playing in Mac OS but it's a little slow, it would be better if I try it with bootcamp??

That would appear to be the consensus, yes.

did you end up doing this? Im getting Windows 10 soon and Ive heard its much better to run games on a boot camped mac. Hows it working for you?

  • Hi monkey1354321

The problem with the widescreen is then solved, because windows has more options than under OS X Yosemite.

Unfortunately I missed this option on my iMac 27 *, I use there no bootcamp. I installed SC on my MBR retina with a 8.1 Windows partition. Things are going well, with no problems.

What I'm most excited about is the SC Edition by Aspyr. It's totally well optimized for Macs. 🙂
