SimCity Limited Edition Internet Issue

Hello,

I purchased the SimCity Limited Edition disc and apparently can't play it without Origin. I have Internet of course, but it's not powerful enough to run the game with the 'nineteen' other devices my kids are constantly running.

Seems like a little bit of a waste of money to purchase a game on a CD only to discover it's not playable without being online. Rather defeats the purpose of buying is on a disc a little, yes? :/

Anyway. I've run a ping test and it's definitely an internet connection issue - which is not going to change any time soon because I pay enough for access already.

Any suggestions on getting this game to work would be most welcome.

Thank you.

Patricia

  • @clothedraven - I feel your pain! I have a very limited data plan and play SimCity offline all the time for the same reasons. Offline/Single Player mode saves your cities to your computer. Online/Multiplayer mode saves them to the server.

Origin will make you log in online. When you launch the game the first time, you will need to at least start the tutorial while online. You can exit it from the menu after it starts - click on the top right three dots and choose to exit. That will take you back to the game launcher. Once you've registered the game to Origin in this manner, then exit the game.

From then on, you can log into Origin, click the Origin menu > Go offline. Then launch the game.

Once you start playing in offline mode, it will open to the Single Player screen instead. If you launch the game while online, you can still get to the offline mode.

When you first start the game, click the "Play" button - the green right-facing arrow in the bottom right (click on the spoiler tag to see a pic):

The game will open another launcher and defaults to Multiplayer Mode (online).

Right under the SimCity banner, there are 2 tabs. Click on the "Single-Player" tab to go offline:

Of course, your tabs won't have any "resume" buttons since you're just starting. Click the play button and create your first region. I hope this helps. Happy Building!

  • @clothedraveni think to be online is necessary to check if your licence is valid and only running on one PC. It is written on the back of the CD!

My solution for this was always, cut the wifi off for the time i want to play and tell them to wait "while i'll fix it" 😇

Hello @BlackjackWidow, and thank you for that detailed answer.

We have a decent plan, but I'm a few rooms away from the router and my kids are always gaming. Their friends even bring their own PCs and TV's over lol

I'll give it a try, maybe move my PC so I can hardwire to the router for a bit, and see if this works. I've only ever played single player offline, (why I go for the disc over the DL) so I'm a little ticked that's not the default on this. Though, I'm also a dinosaur who prefers Sims 2 (and all those expansion packs) to the newer versions lol. Fingers crossed : )

@clothedraven - good luck! The issue with SC2013 is that it originally launched as online-only. They didn't add the option for offline play for 2 years. Once you get everything registered on the pc that first time, it will allow you to log in & open Origin even when you're offline, but it does force you to go online every few logins. I don't know if there's a count or a timeframe, but you can disconnect your pc from the internet and log in to Origin, which will force it to be totally offline.
