simcity

I've been experiencing an issue for several months now: I launch Simcity, but once I get to the main menu screen, I can't click on anything. I remember having a similar issue with Diablo 3 a while ago, and I was able to change the preferences somehow to enable the mouse, but I can't find any options like that with Simcity. Does anyone know how to get past this issue?

  • I'm really glad to hear that the windowed mode made it so you can play. I know you tried setting to your native display resolution. What happens if you force 1080p in the command line? You can try it both in windowed mode & just setting the resolution (which will give you full screen mode, but might bring back the cursor problem)

In Origin, right-click the SimCity icon and choose "Game Properties" > click the "Advanced Launch Options" tab >

type "-r:1920x1080" (without the quotation marks) in the "Command Line Arguments" box. To do it for windowed mode, leave the "-w" in there, too.

    So "-w -r:1920x1080")

  • Hi @jer283 - When you say you can't click on anything, do you mean you can put the cursor on a button but when you click, nothing happens? Or is there no cursor showing at all on your screen? Or something else? Sometimes a mouse theme or enabling mouse tails can cause unexpected results in SimCity. Double-check your mouse settings to make sure they're on default settings and theme. I don't think there are any preference settings in SimCity itself that affect the mouse (other than resolution issues)

Please reply back and give us a little more information. What OS are you running? (Windows or Mac)? Are you using a USB or wireless mouse? Any issues outside the game?

    Hi,

I'm running Mojave on my machine. I checked mouse settings, and there is no option to select default settings, but I haven't changed any settings with my mouse since playing Simcity the last time.

When I start Simcity, I can see my mouse cursor, and move it around, but neither right or left click does anything. It's like the game doesn't even recognize my commands at all. But nothing else on my machine has any issues with the mouse or its settings.

    Thank you.

Hi @jer283 - There is an issue that occurred for some users with Mojave 14.4 and later updates. Usually, the symptoms are that the click action is offset from the cursor onscreen, making it so that you have to place the cursor somewhere off the target in order to get it to click. That may be what you're experiencing.

Try forcing windowed mode through the command line:

In Origin, right-click the SimCity icon and choose "Game Properties" > click the "Advanced Launch Options" tab > type "-w" (without the quotation marks) in the "Command Line Arguments" box. Launch SimCity and go to the Settings menu (upper right three dots). Choose the correct resolution for your screen in the graphics settings.

If the mouse becomes functional again, then check out This Post for other command line switches & workarounds. I suggest trying the last option, to run full screen mode but force the screen resolution to match your desktop display, unless you have a 4k or better monitor. In that case, I suggest playing around with resolutions that are a little lower. SimCity is a legacy game, anything above 1080p is probably going to throttle back anyway.

Let us know if this works. Happy building!

Thank you - setting it to windowed mode allowed me to play the game. But no matter what graphics settings I try, the mouse still will not respond. I tried changing the graphics settings on my Mac to match what was available in the game, but that did not work; the screen went wonky and I could not see anything properly.

However, at least I can play it in windowed mode, even though it is very small.

That did help make it bigger, at least to the point where it's not so difficult to see now. Thanks for all your help!

@jer283 - You're very welcome. So happy to hear that you're able to see the game and play, too! 🙌
