Airing issues

I played a lot of skate 2 and skate 3, the airing seems really bad in this game.. like.. transition riding is so so awful.. am i missing something? i used to gain speed by doing tricks gaining more height with pumping (grabbing or almost grabbing the board) but none of these work in Skate. 

What's the crack with that?
