Box Opening Issues

Whatever I open one of the neighborhood chests, I get the item, then close out of the shop and start skating away and then it randomly says I've leveled up my rip score to many thousands above the next threshold and gives the thing with the box opening. I don't actually get the extra 8 thousand ripscore but it's still an annoyance. 

Is this a known issue?
