Been on the Skate beta for a bit now the actual skating feels amazing, super smooth. But everything wrapped around it is just dragging it down. Vee is the worst offender. Her constant quirky comments are just irritating and add nothing to the game. Same goes for most of the NPCs, you’re forced to sit through their awkward, cringe dialogue whenever you go into or come out of a mission and it just kills the flow.
The missions themselves aren’t much better. They feel really basic, and instead of making them genuinely challenging, the game just throws random obstacles in the way. Every grind has some tree or lamppost placed in the perfect spot to screw you over, and it doesn’t feel like clever design, it just feels cheap, lazy manufactured. Then, once you finally get through the mission, you’re forced to watch a cutscene of the thing you literally just did with no option to skip it. It’s so frustrating and makes the whole process feel like a chore and kills the flow.
The skating itself is what’s keeping me playing, but the levels are poorly designed and it’s obvious they’re leaning on the community to make the real maps instead of putting in the effort themselves. Right now, the core gameplay is great, but everything else wrapped around it just feels badly thought out and makes me less excited about the final game.
And don't even get me started on the microtransactions. EA strikes again.
