Game wont detect Controller - cannot play once I'm in game

The game doesn't seem to recognise any of my controllers. I have tried my xbox controller and 8bitdo controller. This has happened since the last couple of updates, was hoping the last big update would fix it but it hasnt.

I can get through the menus on my Mouse and Keyboard, but once I load in I cannot move and my character just curls into a ball. I cannot navigate the menus with my controller either, the game just doesn't detect any of them (tried wired and wireless). I have tried with Steam closed (as well as any other game launcher) and nothing seems to help. The controllers have been tested and are working fine.
