I am a longtime Skate fan and played this for 35 hours. Here are some thoughts

Besides missing quite a few of my favorite tricks, The skating doesn't feel bad. It almost feels like they nailed it sometimes. If they can continue to improve this and add tricks I will probably keep playing this game casually at least. If not for this I would have probably uninstalled the game about 5 minutes in.

              Cons

  • The tutorial is overkill and 15 hours long. I don't need see "Press Y to mount your board" that many times. It's honestly crazy that I even kept playing by how irritated I was by the unbelievable amount of hand-holding.
  • The map kind of sucks. I've already seen this point made by dozens and dozens of people. Way too flat with no sense of flow.
  • The repeat challenges. A lot of challenges in general are trash and feel AI generated but having to repeat them so much just adds to the disappointment.
  • The shop items are mostly dull and boring at best, ugly and stupid at worst. This only has a couple exceptions. This isn't something I care a lot about, cosmetics aren't going to make or break a game for me

              Pros

  • The skating feels pretty good

So to sum it up EA basically bricked it like everyone said they would. I'd pay 70 dollhairs for a remaster of Skate 1, 2, or 3.

  • I got myself a copy of Skate 2 to compare with the new game, and am genuinely mind-blown by how much worse this game is.

Skate 2 is deep, varied, huge map, real skate culture, real narratives, real voice overs from real pro skaters, loads of game modes and challenges, better map layout. It is miles and miles better than the new skate game. Skate 4 completely ruined itself by corporate decisions.

I don't even agree with the "Pros".

I'm not trying to be one of those "nah the older games are way better" peeps because there are a lot of ways that the style didn't age well but...

Fam, the skating physics are jank. Watch some gameplay of the older game and it's literally a night and day difference in terms of actual skating. In this game you are a peg glued to your board that sticks straight up at all times. You literally couldn't carve if you wanted to. Pumping gives you some sort of nitrous boost. Skate parks are a great way to demonstrate how totally broken vert physics are. Any time you go off a quarter pipe, try to transition to or from a grind, or even just try to skate a half pipe for a few seconds.

I was one of the "everything about this is tragic but at least the skating is fun" people but the last few times I've tried playing I can't even make it more than 5 minutes without getting frustrated at how bugged out the skating is and putting it down.

you got a point with the transition skating. i've already liked how physics based and dynamic the skating in the old games is. in the new skate everything feels too on rails and assisted. it's hard to even land a bit janky on purpose. that kills a lot of transition possibilities that aren't stickly vert. like half body flips off a kicker into a janky grind.
